Dvorak & Schumann: Cello Concertos

Dvorak:

Cello Concerto in B minor, Op. 104

Waldesruhe (Silent woods) for cello and orchestra, Op. 68 No. 5

Schumann:

Cello Concerto in A minor, Op. 129

Jamie Walton is joined by the Philharmonia Orchestra under the baton of their conductor laureate Vladimir Ashkenazy for this new concerto recording of concertos and orchestral works by Dvorák and Schumann.

Jamie Walton has proved himself as a leading light in UK's musical life; as a performer in his widely praised concerto and sonata recordings, and as a festival director in his work as founder of the North York Moors Festival, which was shortlisted for an RPS Award in 2011.

“Walton's latest anthology for Signum once again shows him to be an impressive performer in terms of technical acumen, stylish refinement and burnished tone. The Philharmonia, too respond with beguiling poise...[the Schumann] winningly combines strength of personality, expressive reach and big-hearted sincerity.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2013

“Jamie Walton’s individual phrases are eloquently lyrical and the technical components are accomplished” The Strad, May 2013

“The two concertos on either side of this lovely miniature, ably supported by the Philharmonia, confirm Walton as an artist with secure intuition in terms of style and with a manner of performing that speaks with natural fluency, eloquence and strength of purpose.” The Telegraph, 8th March 2013 ****

Four Songs, Op. 82: No. 1, ‘Leave Me Alone’

On this disc, Christian Poltéra and Kathryn Stott chart the gradual development in Dvořák’s composition for cello.

The disc includes chamber works that Dvořák composed originally for cello and piano or arranged for the combination including Polonaise in A major, the Rondo in G minor and Silent Woods which was originally a piano duet.

Poltéra also presents his own transcriptions of several violin pieces and songs, including the Violin Sonatina, and Lasst mich allein, alongside the ever-popular Songs My Mother Taught Me and Song to the Moon from Rusalka.

Christian Poltéra and Kathryn Stott are regular chamber music partners and have previously recorded music by Honegger and Frank Martin.

“This recording bathes the listener in a stream of irresistable song that lingers in the memory weeks later. It also proves how well the composer's lyricism translates across timbre and sonority: this 'Song to the Moon' is as searingly effective as any I've heard sung...the recorded sound is ideal.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2013 ****

“[the Sonatina] works particularly well in its new baritone and tenor register...This attests to both the sensitive way in which Poltera has adapted the music to the cello medium and to the deft and affectionate manner in which he plays it. So natural does the Sonatina sound on the cello that you wonder why Dvorak himself never thought of doing it.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2013

The award winning Argentinian cellist Sol Gabetta focuses her considerable talents on Late Romantic cello repertoire on her latest release on RCA Red Seal/Sony Music Entertainment. Gabetta’s sensational live recording of the Elgar: Cello Concerto is the centrepiece to a stunning new album from one of classical music’s most thrilling and successful young stars. Ms. Gabetta is joined on the works by Elgar, Dvorák and Respighi by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Mario Venzago.

In addition to Elgar’s concerto, Ms. Gabetta’s new release features three of Elgar’s miniatures, the introspective Sospiri and the light-hearted, romantic salon pieces Salut d’amour and La capricieuse, in new arrangements for cello and orchestra. The album also includes Antonín Dvorák’s Waldesruh and Rondo and Ottorino Respighi’s rarely recorded Adagio con variazioni.

“I love the way she finds nobility tinged with melancholy in the glorious main theme [of the Elgar's first movement] which is delightfully underlined...Gabetta’s moving and beautifully played recording of the Elgar is one that I will certainly return to often.” MusicWeb International, 20th May 2013

Tomáš Jamník (cello)

Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, Tomáš Netopil

Dvořák and cello? Why, of course – after all, his Concerto in B minor is the most frequently recorded cello concerto of all time. Dvořák himself esteemed it immensely: “...I have just finished a new concerto for cello, and I can tell you that I am absolutely certain that this concerto far outstrips the other two concertos of mine… Self-aggrandisement is not reliable – but I must tell you that I am terribly pleased with the work, and I think I am not mistaken.” However, several other Dvořák opuses for cello too deserve great attention owing to their sheer beauty.

In addition to two small moods pieces (Rondo, Silent Woods), it concerns his virtually unknown first cello concerto; the original version for piano and orchestra was instrumented by the Dvořák connoisseur Jarmil Burghauser within the intentions of Dvořák’s instrumentation of his first symphonies dating from the same period. In the concerto, the twenty-four-year-old Dvořák revels in ideas that in the case of another composer would suffice for several symphonies.

Our CD containing the complete Dvořák works for cello and orchestra features Tomáš Jamník, laureate of the Prague Spring international competition and one of the most talented young cellists of the present day. The conductor Tomáš Netopil, whose star is rapidly rising (noteworthy is his recent guest appearance with the Berliner Philharmoniker at concerts dedicated to the late Sir Charles Mackerras), is together with the Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra a superlative partner to Jamník. The young blood of Tomáš Jamník and Tomáš Netopil courses through the new recording of both Dvořák cello concertos.

“Tomáš Jamník's excellent new recording is...sympathetically accompanied under Tomáš Netopil, an imaginative Dvorakian with a keen ear...Jamník's performance is focused and assured, not at all in step with the more heavily romanticised approach of the Rostropovich school.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2011

“What distinguishes this performance is Jamník's relationship with all the orchestral players, as first among equals but as a musician among musicians all responding to the particular beauties of the work, given their due by very sensitive attention to detail by the conductor and in the recording. This makes it quite outstanding.” International Record Review, April 2011
