"Jan is a worthy winner. He has fascinated us from the first round. Not only with his technical skills, but also with his charisma on stage" the chairman of the jury of the 2014 Fritz Kreisler Competition announced after Mrácek’s performance with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra was met with thunderous applause. Prior to this Mrácek has studied with the great Czech master Václav Hudecek, as well as with Levon Chilingirian, Gavriel Lipkind and Ida Haendel.

For his debut CD, Jan Mrácek has chosen an all Czech programme devoted to Dvorák. The violin concerto sits on the margins of that exclusive club of 'great' concertos but this is to misunderstand the originality and genius of this concerto, dedicated to Joseph Joachim, written by a superb violinist with a deep understanding of the capabilities of his instrument.

The easy charm and lyricism of the music has always appealed to the public. The haunting 'Romance in F' originally formed the slow movement of an early String Quartet Op. 9, and has the ability to stick in the listener’s memory long after the music has stopped. 'Mazurek' Op.49 was dedicated to Pablo de Sarasate and is typical of Dvorak’s Slavonic style. The 'Four Romantic Pieces' Op. 75 were composed for a group of friends of varying musical abilities, and are charming, easy-going works.

“Mráček offers a lusty performance of the infrequently performed Mazurek, Op 49 – both violinist and conductor score maximum points here.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2016

“the highlights here are Marilyn Horne party pieces: Dolci d’amor parole from Tancredi and Ah, quel giorno ognor rammento from Semiramide, in which Fagioli is a plausible impersonator of the great US singer.” Sunday Times, 30th October 2016

In the first half of the 19th century, ‘czech music’ was still limited to single popular genres like songs, choral music or piano music. But in the second half of the 19th century, larger scale music emerged and also music specific connotated ‘Heimatmusik’ (home music). Werner von Schnitzler and Cosmin Boeru present some outstanding examples of this music.

Steinberg Duo

Recently described by The Sunday Telegraph as having both “warm musicality” and “virtuosity”, and by Gramophone magazine as “passionately committed advocates”, the Steinberg Duo has performed in Canada, Spain, Germany and throughout the UK. 2013 marked the rele ase of their first commercial recording for the Nimbus Alliance label, their first live broadcast on BBC Radio 3, their first concerto appearance with the Orchestra of the Swan, as well as recitals at Blackheath Halls, Fairfield Halls, 1901 Arts Club and various music clubs around the U K. The 2013 CD release of Sawyers & Elgar Violin Sonatas has enthralled the critics: Bruce Reader described their playing as having “the listener teetering on the edge of melancholy and joy”, while John France, for MusicWeb International, described the disc as “a startling discovery… an exemplary performance”. The Swiss magazine, Music und Theater wrote, “The interpretations of the Steinberg Duo are simply phenomenal. So lucid, passionate and unsentimental, they make the work s sparkle”. Andrew Schartmann, writing for Music & Vision, stated, “Rarely does a recording exude so much energy while remaining sensitive to even the subtlest of details.

From the first measure, we know that something special is unfolding be fore us — a quality that lasts through to the very end. In short, no amount of writing can do justice to the last three tracks on this disc.”

Renaud Capuçon has established himself as an artist with a reputation for impeccable performances and fine interpretations of classics and lesser-known repertoire. From his most recent album with critically-acclaimed readings of the Bach Violin Concertos and the Vasks Violin Concerto, to the Beethoven/ Korngold and Brahms/Berg concertos, Renaud has become known for the breadth of his repertoire, his world-class chamber music partners, and the quality of his playing.

For this album he recorded a recital for violin and piano – his first since the Beethoven Sonatas with Frank Braley in 2010 – and partners with Khatia Buniatishvili for a disc of some of the most powerful works from the Romantic period, all composed during the autumn/winter of 1886-1887. Also a great friend and regular chamber music partner of Martha Argerich, Khatia Buniatishvili is one of the fastest-rising young pianists of recent years, making her debut recording for Sony in 2011, receiving the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award in 2010, and in 2012 being named Best Newcomer of the Year at the Echo Klassik awards.

“For much of the time Capuçon and Buniatishvili are alive to the tinest detail...Their approach may risk seeming indulgent, but is utterly convincing in the moment with so many hair-raising details...this is enthralling playing and nicely recorded.” BBC Music Magazine, Christmas 2014 ****

“Despite the fact that Renaud Capucon plays with a full-blooded tone, it is rare to hear him overblow, either in Bach or - as here - in more robust repertoire. Rather, there is a calmness to his sense of melody that has a tendency to give his performances identity enough.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2014

Four Pieces for Violin and Piano, Op. 17

Jennifer Pike (violin) & Tom Poster (piano)

Since bursting onto the musical scene as a prodigiously talented youngster, Jennifer Pike has earned admirers the world over with her intelligent musicianship and dazzling technique. Her stunning recent recording of Sibelius’s Violin Concerto, described in The Mail on Sunday as an ‘auspicious entry into the big league’, confirmed her status as a truly outstanding soloist of the highest calibre. Here she is joined by her established duo partner Tom Poster in music for violin and piano by three great Czech composers.

Dvořák’s four Romantic Pieces, originally composed for string trio, are miniatures of beguiling simplicity and unselfconscious lyricism. The Nocturne in B major also started life in a different guise, this time as an abandoned movement from the String Quartet in E minor.

Josef Suk was a member of a generation of Czech composers who built on the foundations which Dvořák and Smetana had laid. His Four Pieces were something of a turning point in his output, widening his range of harmony and expression; they develop from the serious and dark qualities of the first, ‘Quasi ballata’, to the high spirits of the concluding ‘Burleska’.

The Violin Sonata is perhaps the first work that Janáček composed in his strikingly original mature style. Each movement is built from highly charged and intensely expressive melodic fragments. The Allegro recorded here was originally intended as the Sonata’s final movement but later replaced. The Romance and Dumka come from a much earlier period in the composer’s life but no doubt demonstrate a Slavonic spirit that was to remain with Janáček always.

“She is particularly alluring in Dvorak's Romantic Pieces, by turns intimate, consoling and confiding - and always beautifully controlled...Pike and Poster make a great double-act...A fine recording and informative notes complete an enticing disc.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2014
