| | | Yehudi MenuhinRecorded at Charlie Chaplin Studios, 1947
Concert Magic, which premiered in San Francisco in 1947, was the first motion picture concert in film history (Concert Magic Item No. 2054158). In addition, many short films were made to fill the space between the traditional double features. They were also often used as encores when enthusiastic audiences demanded them. Among these encores is an especially valuable rarity, the violin concerto of Felix Mendelssohn. The length (ca. 25 minutes) prevented it from inclusion in the film. This footage shows Menuhin’s very first recorded performance of Mendelssohn`s violin concerto and other encores. Even music specialists are unaware of the existence of this previously unreleased material! Bonus: A Violinist in Hollywood + On the Encores – Yehudi Menuhin in conversation with Humphrey Burton. Exactly 50 years after the creation of the film in 1997, Yehudi Menuhin and Humphrey Burton, director of a number of Bernstein concerts and an expert on and biographer of Menuhin, view the film in front of cameras. Menuhin comments on his playing technique, speaks about the origin of the film and reminisces about events which transpired at the time of the film. His reactions and comments about the pieces are very personal. Michael Rabin was a virtuoso of the highest order, one of the most talented violinists of the 20th century. A child prodigy, he performed in public for the first time aged only eleven. From the early 1950s, Rabin gave concerts across the globe and made numerous recordings, including the complete Paganini Caprices. He worked himself into a state of exhaustion, going through a crisis in the 1960s which temporarily compromised his playing. However, Rabin managed to recover and return to his former glory. These recordings, made by the RIAS and released here for the first time, document his comeback in an impressive manner: the live recording of Max Bruch's First Violin Concerto, made in the Berlin Philharmonie, is of particular interest as Rabin never made an LP recording of it. In the short virtuoso pieces, the violinist - who died at a tragically young age - demonstrates himself to have been a romantic virtuoso par excellence: he displays a sensuous tone and an enthralling technique. “…a technical wizard and an artist in total command of his instrument, someone who would surely have developed an extra musical dimension had he been granted another 30 or so years to do so.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2009 | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |

Ricardo Odnoposoff (violin) One of the finest violinists of all time, Ricardo Odnoposoff was born in Buenos Aires on February 24, 1914, the son of Russian immigrants. Following early studies in Buenos Aires and Berlin, he was accepted at thirteen to the Berlin Hochschule für Musik, where he studied violin with Carl Flesch from 1928 to 1931 and composition under Paul Hindemith. At the end of these studies, his career was inaugurated by an appearance, at 17, as a featured soloist with the Berlin Philharmonic, conducted by Erich Kleiber. An examination of his recorded legacy reveals a supreme artist, equipped with a brilliant technical command. | | | This item is currently out of stock at the UK distributor.
