Eli Kristin Hanssveen (soprano)

Operaorkestret, John Fiore

Critics rightfully have called soprano Eli Kristin Hanssveen “the new opera diva”. Her spectacular voice has been the catalyst for a steadily rising career, and she is known for her unique charisma and acting talent. In 2002 she made her opera debut at the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, where she has been soloist since 2010.

“a short ride in a fast machine...Can she do all this? Well, yes, and often rather well” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2013

“It is [in the Ravel] that the Operaorkesteret under the sensitive John Fiore show themselves to be quite superb and not merely a band knocked together for a recording...Hanssveen clearly loves the experience. This all demonstrates that her voice is marvellously flexible and...she is well able to delve into and indeed inhabit the romantic heart of these chosen pieces.” MusicWeb International, 21st March 2014

Ailyn Pérez (soprano) & Iain Burnside (piano)

A delightful programme of French and Spanish song explores the theme of love found, enjoyed and lost, from the dropped hints of Fauré to the fiery folk passion of Turina, Obradors and de Falla. The gentle charm of Reynaldo Hahn and impassioned fervour of Massenet’s Manon are equally captured by American soprano Ailyn Pérez, who has bewitched audiences on both sides of the Atlantic in opera and song.

“Poème d’un jour” explores the musical traditions of France and Spain through composers including Hahn, Massenet, Faure, Obradors, Turina and de Falla.

“The singer most frequently brought to mind...is Victoria de los Angeles, partly because of the programme but also the vocal qualities on display: the delicacy, lightness and timbre of her soprano, the exquisite way she can float a vocal line and particularly the coquettish charm of her Manon” International Record Review, June 2013

“There’s a hint of Victoria de los Angeles in the programming and the style of this lovely young American soprano...In the Seven Popular Spanish Songs, she rivals de los Angeles with her alternately seductive and anguished manner.” Sunday Times, 2nd June 2013

“She proves to be a fine exponent of French music, discreetly erotic in Fauré's Poème d'un Jour, the cycle that gives the disc its title, and breathtaking in Hahn's À Chloris, with which she opens...Iain Burnside, a fine accompanist throughout, comes into his own [in the Turina]” The Guardian, 8th August 2013 ****

“Pérez's Hahn and Fauré selections are subtly shaped, but the Massenet is on a different level of immediacy and character.” The Independent, 15th June 2013 *****

2012 is the centenary of Jules Massenet’s death. Several of his operas have received important revivals this year

Unlike most other Massenet albums released this year this 2CD set celebrates equally his orchestral music (now becoming familiar once again in the concert hall after several years of neglect) and his operas.

Although the performances were recorded in the mono era, the majority of vocal extracts stem from a golden period of French music-making (1910s-1930s) and the orchestral recordings have been rated by critics as sonically ahead of their time.

Singers include Edmond Clément, Ninon Vallin, Georges Thill, Emma Luart, Bidu Sayão, Marcel Journet, Fanny Heldy and Cesare Valletti in roles they made famous. Jean Fournet, Albert Wolff, Robert Irving and Sir Thomas Beecham conduct the works for orchestra.

Géori Boué (soprano)

The French soprano Géori Boué was particularly associated with French repertoire.

This collection includes works by Gounod, Massenet, Bizet and Berlioz as well as Italian composers of opera.

Many of the recordings date from 1942-1949.

“she has rather a small voice for this spectrum of the repertoire, at least as it’s preserved on record...Her diction and stylishness in Massenet are excellent... I hope this disc stimulates others that more fully celebrate the musicianship of this admirable artist.” MusicWeb International, 9th May 2013
