Arbor Piano Trio: Dmitri Vorobiev (piano), Stephen Shipps (violin) & Richard Aaron (cello) Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů excelled in chamber music and made a substantial contribution to the piano trio repertoire of the twentieth century, his keen ear for balance and sonority finding here a perfect medium for his music. Trio No. 1, Cinq pièces brèves, written in an appealing and virtuosic neo-classical style in Paris in 1930, was admired by Stravinsky. Trios Nos. 2 and 3, composed in America in 1951, are more ambitious in scope and notable for their rhythmic verve and unpredictability, ingratiating themes and elegiac slow movements. | | | (also available to download from $6.25) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Dvorák, Fibich & Martinu - Piano Trios
“As with their previous recordings, there is nothing routine about the Smetana Trio's approach to this engaging repertoire. The performance of the Dvorák Trio is perhaps the most remarkable. The first movement has breadth as well as, in the delightful second melody, infectious bounce; the soulful Adagio is genuinely moving and the finale splendidly rounded...” BBC Music Magazine, November 2007 **** “Not surprisingly, the performance by the Smetana Trio – cellist Jan Pálenícek is the son of the original
Smetana Trio pianist, Josef – is thoroughly idiomatic, with the many dumka speed-changes sounding
totally natural and spontaneous. What instantly strikes the ear is the delicacy, the piano relatively light to
bring out the filigree textures of much of the writing.” Gramophone Magazine | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Beethoven, Dvorak & Martinu: Piano TriosThe Queen Elizabeth Hall, London-15th October 1972
“the Czech Trio (including legendary pianist Josef Palanicek) are at their most spontaneously joyful in the Ghost Trio and emotionally arresting in the Dumky.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2012 **** “There is potency and vivid pleasure throughout the performance … This [recording] fills a real need and catches [The Czech Trio] on the wing, on tour, and on splendid form. The recording is equally vivid and allows one to hear considerable detail without detracting in any way from the ensemble sureties on show. It goes to show how immediate, and yet sympathetic, good microphone placement can be. This excellent disc earns my warm admiration” MusicWeb International, January 2010 “This performance [of the Dumky Trio] is perhaps the finest that I have heard. It has the proper Czech lilt...The Beethoven Trio was also well played … Overall, it is one of the finest performances of this work that I know...The Martinů is the encore. It’s too bad that the whole trio wasn’t performed as it, too, is very well played” American Record Guide, July/August 2010 “The Czech Trio […] was a formidable ensemble live: fearless but superbly controlled, committed and stylish. These characteristics come through impressively in the two trios recorded at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in October 1972: Beethoven’s ‘Ghost’ and Dvořák’s ‘Dumky’. The Beethoven is excellent, but the Dvořák is the highlight: a performance of remarkable eloquence and understanding” International Record Review, June 2012 “The audience is commendably silent, and the playing remarkably poised and assured” The Strad, July 2012 | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

| | | Martinu - Piano Trios Nos. 1-3
Martinu wrote no less than ten scores for trio with keyboard, including four in the classic formation of piano, violin and cello, spread out between 1930 and 1951.The charming Bergerettes make up a modest pastorale in the spirit of the cantata Kytice.Trio No. 2 pays homage to Fauré, whereas the last Trio prefigures the expressive power of the Fantaisies symphoniques (Symphony No.6), sketched out at the beginning of May 1951 in New York. The Kinsky Trio is heir to the famed Czech tradition, from the Suk Trio and Vlach Quartet to the Guarneri Trio, Kocian and Pražák quartets… “…well executed and enthusiastic performances. Praga's sound is spot on, the three instruments carefully but naturally balanced as a satisfying ensemble. Warmly recommended.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2009 | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |
