Christoph Spering wants the listener to appreciate the work in its original and intellectual context. The concert includes the lesser-known overture Die Weihe des Hauses (The Consecration of the House) and also the Kyrie, Credo and Agnus Dei from the Missa Solemnis, here presented as ‘Drei Hymnen’ to surmount the problem of liturgical music being censored for performace in a theatre. “Christoph Spering and his period-instrument band tear into the music like a pack of demons, giving it exactly the kind of rhythmic surge it demands.
