Yuanfan Yang (piano)

This is the debut recording from Yuanfan Yang, piano category winner of the 2012 BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, and an equally exciting pianist and composer.

Still only 19 years old and of Chinese origin, Yang has received prizes and invitations around the world for both his pianistic and his compositional abilities, both showcased on this disc of repertoire including Schubert, Liszt, Maxwell-Davis and Yuanfan Yang's own compositions.

“This is, in all respects, a young man’s disc...[the Aquarelles were] written when Yang was in his mid-teens. They are vividly programmatic, relating to waves, the sinking sun and a haunted bell, and ranging in mood from splashy virtuosity to a soulful poignancy impressive in one so young.” The Observer, 13th August 2017 ***

Niu Niu (piano)

“Given that Niu Niu was only 14 when he made this recording last year, his achievement is remarkable. His equable, rounded tone is underpinned by mature technique...Sometimes a big enough response to the music's soaring flight is lacking...Clearly though, here is a fine musical talent.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2013 ***

“in purely digital terms, Niu Niu produces some remarkable playing. He has a wonderful leggiero touch when required: the 'Spinnerlied' from The Flying Dutchman is very fine (how good to hear a youngster revive this old favourite)...Niu Niu is able to breathe fresh life into an old chestnut like the Liebestraum No. 3. So - fantastic fingers, bags of potential but, as yet, no charm.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2013

“Poetic insights? Moments of repose? Those must wait, if they arrive at all, for the prodigy’s mature adulthood...the piano tone is varied and round, never appearing to have been stamped out by a music-making machine. Another good omen could be the modest, almost casual way that Niu Niu often concludes a piece, rarely emphasising the final chord.” The Times, 11th January 2013 ***

Inna Faliks (piano), Rebecca Mozo (narrator)

Inna Faliks is a spellbinding Ukrainian-born pianist with a glowing international reputation. Her long-standing practice of alternating musical interludes with the spoken word takes the form here of narrative storytelling. And with this unique CD—her first for Delos—Inna has a captivating, powerful and very moving tale to tell. Her story chronicles her life’s path: her family’s emigration to America, her seminal early influences and her evolution as an artist. And it’s also her love story, as she is reunited as an adult with the childhood friend who is now her husband. Each episode of the pianist’s saga—dramatically narrated by actress Rebecca Mozo— alternates with a beautifully played masterpiece that is closely connected to her life story from childhood onward. Music and words combine to spin a powerful and moving tale.

Youri Egorov (piano)

Yuri’s playing was unique. It was completely unaffected and was characterised by its total integrity as well as by an enormous love for the music’s inner poetry. He was the perfect example of a musician who existed only to serve the music he performed. His playing was transparent and refined, with a profound respect for the music’s narrative line; he devoted his phenomenal technique to the realisation of his artistic vision.

“Brahms’s Op. 117 Intermezzos are suitably melancholy and characterised throughout by a lovely silvery, lean sound, judiciously pedalled…Ravel’s Miroirs are the standouts of the collection, as vivid and piquant as they are exhilarating” Gramophone Magazine, July 2016
