Elizabeth Calleo (Bastienne), Michael Slattery (Bastien), Martin Winkler (Colas) & Olivier Cesarini (Boy) Orchestre de l’Opéra de Rouen Haute-Normandie, Laurence Equilbey (conductor & musical conception) & Claude Buchwald (director) Anaïs & Olivier Spiro (film directors) A wonderfully eerie and fantastical re-imagining of Mozart’s early oneact singspiel, Bastien und Bastienne, presented here on DVD in a film adaptation by acclaimed directors, Anaïs and Olivier Spiro. Elizabeth Calleo and Martin Winkler triumph in Mozart’s timeless magical tale - filmed live at the Opéra de Rouen in March 2007, whilst acclaimed conductor Laurence Equilbey directs the Orchestre de Opéra de Rouen Haute-Normandie. ‘Bastien under Bastienne’ is a one-act comic opera composed in 1768 by the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, then twelve years old. It was one of Mozart’s first operatic works and one in which the musical and dramatic genius of Mozart is already apparent. ‘Les Amours de Bastien et Bastienne’, a show devised by Laurence Equilbey and director Claude Buchvald, includes not only the opera proper but also other pieces by Mozart drawn from serenades, divertimenti, and dance. These musical inserts, composed around the same time of the opera, serve to illustrate fragments of the imagination, moments of fantasy, accompanying the magic of the forest and the emotions of the hero and heroine. “It is an initiatory tale which speaks to us of our fears, our dreams, our condition” – Claude Buchvald (director) “Given the weight of theory behind this project, the result is remarkably unaffected...Equilbey's interpretations fit ideally to the score...The orchestral playing is stylish, the choreography exuberant.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2010 **** | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |

Mozart: | Le nozze di Figaro, K492 Rita Streich (Susanna), Walter Berry (Figaro), Sena Jurinac (Countess Almaviva), Paul Schöffler (Count Almaviva), Christa Ludwig (Cherubino), Ira Malaniuk (Marcellina), Oskar Czerwenka (Bartolo), Erich Majkut (Basilio), Murray Dickie (Curzio), Karl Dönch (Antonio), Rosl Schwaiger (Barbarina) Wiener Staatsopernchor, Karl Böhm Bastien und Bastienne, K50 Ilse Holweg (Bastienne), Waldemar Kment (Bastien), Walter Berry (Colas) John Pritchard |
This valuable three CD set couples two of the most admired complete recordings of Mozart operas from the 1950s which have long since been unavailable. Karl Böhm was one of the greatest Mozart conductors of his generation, and on this complete Viennese recording of Le nozze di Figaro he directs a cast which at the time could not have been bettered, featuring some of the finest post-war Mozart singers. Sir John Pritchard completes the set with a sparking performance of Mozart's very early one-act opera Bastien und Bastienne, a delightful opera which is very rarely heard today. The recorded sound is of excellent vintage. “Jurinac serves Countess Almaviva with lovely tone, but her breath-control is challenged by Bohm's protracted tempo for 'Porgi amor'...The female side is admirable, for Streich sparkles in silvery freshness and Christa Ludwig's Cherubino benefits from a rounded tone...Berry, in rousing voice, is an ebullient Figaro. Paul Schoffler's voice has lost some richness, but he is an intelligent singer.” International Record Review, December 2011 | | | Usually despatched in 8 - 10 working days. |

Brilliant operatic gems – 11 short-operas with all-star casts in a complete edition When great masters compose miniature operas, the result is – well, masterly. Mozart, Weber, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Gluck, Lortzing and D' Albert: one-act operas from these famous pens are true gems of music history – and of the EMI archives. The Electrola recordings of these 11 short operas (mostly in Singspiel form) were made in the 1970's, but thanks to their all-star casts, which are nothing short of legendary, they seem as fresh as ever. Now EMI is releasing them in a complete edition for the first time. "I was regularly surprised to find that there are still some undiscovered little jewels among the minor works of major composers" – thus Ekkehard Pluta in the magazine Klassik heute, reporting on these small but entirely fine works when they first appeared on CD in 1998: We hear the brilliant young Mendelssohn as composer of two Singspiele that were performed in the family circle, we hear Schubert's still little-known contributions to the musical repertoire of the Vienna Volkstheater, Weber's Abu Hassan and – especially delightful – works where the composer made fun of the music scene of his day, such as Lortzing's Opernprobe or Mozart's Schauspieldirektor. In addition to the commendable rediscovery of this repertoire, the recordings derive special appeal from outstanding singers, who wittily recreate the generally light-hearted spirit of these works: singers like Nicolai Gedda, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Edda Moser, Anneliese Rothenberger, Helen Donath, Hermann Prey and Kurt Moll. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
