In a high-spirited romp that irresistibly parodies the dramatic and musical gestures of Italian grand opera, The Pirates of Penzance tells the story of Frederic, apprenticed in error to a shipload of good-natured buccaneers. Famously featuring a loquacious major general and an ineffectual police squad, the operetta received its premiere in New York in 1879, thus pre-empting any ‘pirate’ American productions of the kind that followed the London success of its maritime predecessor, HMS Pinafore. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Also included is an extremely rare 1969 Decca recording of Sullivan Choruses conducted by James Walker, better known in musical circles as one of Decca’s key recording engineers, but an ardent G&S fan. It receives its first release on Decca CD. A perfect introduction to the set pieces and patter songs in orchestral guise. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Sullivan: Gilbert And Sullivan Overtures
“The first thing that sets this apart from other collections of Sullivan overtures is that – for the first time – it covers the entire Gilbert and Sullivan output. The only works that are missing are Thespis, Trial by Jury and Utopia Limited, none of which had overtures as such. The sensible addition of the overture to Cox and Box means that all the Sullivan comic operas likely to be of interest to the general collector are here. An even more intelligent feature is that they're presented in chronological order, so that one can chart the progression of Sullivan's comic opera style from the very French-sounding ending of Cox and Box and the equally French-sounding opening of TheSorcerer through to more distinctively Sullivanesque sounds of the later pieces. None of this would count for much if the performances weren't up to scratch. Happily they're models of their kind. Andrew Penny has an agreeably light touch, alternatively reflective and sparkling, and gets graceful phrasing from the Royal Ballet Sinfonia – ideal performers of light music. Nobody wanting a collection of Sullivan's comic opera overtures need look elsewhere.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | (also available to download from $5.75) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
