“This Warner DVD offers idiomatic performances from La Scala of Puccini's trilogy. The productions are broadly traditional, with an ultra-realistic set for the grand guignol of Iltabarro and rather more stylised settings for SuorAngelica and Gianni Schicchi.
Casting is strong in Il tabarro, with Piero Cappuccilli in his prime as Michele, the cuckolded bargemaster. His appeal to Giorgetta, his estranged wife, is so passionate and tender that his climactic solo has your total sympathy. Sylvia Sass as Giorgetta tends to overact; the steely edge in her voice helps keep your sympathies with Michele. As Luigi, Nicola Martinucci is powerful and unstrained. Outstanding among the others is Eleonora Jankovic as La Frugola, firm of voice and characterful without overacting.
The staging of the murder and Michele's revealing of the body under his cloak, always tricky to bring off, is neatly managed.
The stylised set for Suor Angelica is unobjectionable.
What dominates, as it should, is Rosalind Plowright's moving performance of the title role.
Next to her, Dunja Vejzovic is disappointing, not so much vocally as in appearance and personality; she seems too young and lightweight; hardly the unforgiving Princess. The nuns are nicely touched in, and the chorus is impressive. Brian Large's direction sidesteps the final and sentimental vision of Angelica's dead child.
Gianni Schicchi is placed in an enormous apartment with a panoramic view over Florence. The claustrophobia that can add point to the comic story is entirely absent, but the set is undistracting.
Eleonora Jankovic again stands out among the incidental characters as the old woman, Zita, and Yuri Marusin as Rinuccio copes well with his big aria. Lauretta, his lover, is strongly cast, with Cecilia Gasdia luxuriantly drawing out 'O mio babbino caro' in finely shaded phrases, to the delight of the Scala audience. Juan Pons is a firm and commanding Schicchi, taking centrestage from his first entry.”

“a triumph...three wonderfully directed and expertly acted productions. Add in Pappano's impeccable conducting and his valuable introductions to the pieces, and you have a nigh-on ideal Trittico.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2012 *****

“In the theatre, Suor Angelica packed a stronger punch [than Il Tabarro]. Here, on DVD, it is little short of devastating...Jaho's youthful vulnerability is deeply moving...Gianni Schicchi is a wicked 1960s delight...Outstandingly filmed, this set marks a high point for live opera on DVD...I have no hesitation in making this new Trittico the top recommendation.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2012

“Pappano draws consistently fine playing from the orchestra...Gallo is in very good from as Michele...Westbroek gives her all in Giorgetta's contrasting scenes...Jaho dominates [Suor Angelica], of course, and in a role which she had never sung before...Gallo exhibits his facility for comic roles [in Schicchi]...One will have to look far to find a better trio of performances than these” International Record Review, September 2012

Puccini: Il Trittico

Tito Gobbi, Giacionto Prandelli, Victoria de los Angeles, Fedora Barbieri, Mina Doro, Corinna Vozza, Giuseppe Taddei, Grete Rapisardi, Fernando Corena & Franco Calabrese

Coro e Orchestra del Teatro dell’Opera di Roma & Orchestra della RAI di Torino, Vincenzo Bellezza, Tullio Serafin & Alfredo Simonetto

Puccini united three one-act operas into a single cycle in Il Trittico – although all three works differed in terms of style and design. The first part, Il Tabarro, a tragedy about love and jealousy, was set against the dismal background of boatmen and harbour workers, whose lives did not boast the carefree and merry charm of Bohème. The second work, Suor Angelica, was set in the seclusion of a convent. Angelica boasts an entirely female cast and the opera has a gentle, solemn mood. The third work is a legacy-hunter story from 1299, borrowed from Dante‘s thirtieth song from Inferno, the third part of the Divine Comedy. The three outstanding singers to be heard on this 1949 recording are Victoria de los Angeles, Tito Gobbi and Giuseppe Taddei.

In 1979, Il Trittico was performed at the Vienna State Opera for the first time complete in the original Italian. Gerd Albrecht was in the pit, and the excitement that he was able to maintain throughout the evening comes across even when listening to this recording. No-one from the house ensemble here took on a role in more than one of the operas which resulted in a cast able to convey a maximum degree of identification with their respective roles. Thus the love triangle in Tabarro grips us thanks to Marilyn Zschau's energetic vocal achievement as Giorgetta and to Renato Bruson's mighty, flowing baritone as her jealous husband - thus equipped, he is even a match for the elemental vocal prowess of Vladimir Atlantov in the role of his rival.

In Suor Angelica, Pilar Lorengar offers a deeply moving interpretation of the title role, for she manages in masterly fashion to find the balance between beauty of sound and expressive power - a balance so hard to achieve in Puccini. The Swedish mezzo Kerstin Meyer is an impressive foil to her, for while her voice is more powerful than that of many of her famous peers, she still manages to convey a residual ounce of humanity behind her character's steely façade. And finally, as one would expect,Walter Berry's portrayal of Gianni Schicchi offers us a slice of life at its fullest, while Sonia Ghazarian as his daughter Lauretta has a voice ideal for the task. With Yordi Ramiro, Margarita Lilova and Marjana Lipovšek, the legacy hunters too are given real personality, while Erich Kunz, late in his career, provides a classic characterisation of the doctor Spinelloccio.

2008 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Puccini (22 December). Decca’s recordings of Puccini’s operas rank among the very finest ever committed to disc. This legacy was started in 1951 when Renata Tebaldi made her first recording of Madama Butterfly and throughout the rest of the 1950s Tebaldi recorded Puccini’s other major operas. At the end of the 1950s new stereo versions were made of Madama Butterfly and La Bohème. Tebaldi was cast alongside such distinguished colleagues as Carlo Bergonzi and Mario del Monaco and acclaimed opera maestri at the helm of these recordings include Francesco Molinari-Pradelli and Tullio Serafin. This collection of the great Puccini operas includes the stereo versions of Butterfly and Bohème and is the ideal collection of some of the world’s most popular and enduring operas in acclaimed recordings that have been an integral part of Decca’s legendary opera catalogue for the past fifty years.
