Walter-Heinz Bernstein (pianoforte), Maria Bräutigam (Italian Harpsichord), Winfried Schrammek (clavichord) & Armin Thalheim (harpsichord) The former German Democratic Republic took its role as guardian of the important German cultural traditions, especially in music, very seriously, and this can clearly be seen not only in the magnificent archives of music from central Germany and the court of Frederick the Great, but also in collections of early instruments. This 2-CD set features music performed on keyboards produced by some of the greatest instrument makers of their time, including Gottfried Silbermann, Heinrich Harrass and Johann Jacob Donat. They are preserved in collections at the Händel-Haus at Halle/Saale, and in music instrument museums at Leipzig, Markneukirchen and Potsdam Sanssouci. | | | (also available to download from $21.75) | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. Violaine Cochard (harpsichord) "This recording is the result of "love at first sight" – mine for this wonderful Dulcken harpsichord! I have been fortunate in having had opportunity to play the instrument on several occasions, each time with the same emotion. Following my fancy, I played pieces that particularly appeal to me emotionally, most of them written by that great man of genius, Johann Sebastian Bach, since the qualities of this extraordinary instrument are so perfectly attuned to his music, combining brilliance and refinement, power and interiority. I have tried to create a programme that is both diverse and coherent, including various writing processes and genres of which Bach particularly found, such as traditional counterpoint, the fantasia and dances. The dances I have chosen have been isolated from their suites so that we may hear them differently and see them in a new light, in a different context, thus also highlighting their specificities. In the same spirit, I have also removed other pieces from their usual contexts. In the end the programme offers a contrast in forms, effects and atmospheres, like a concert; but there is unity in the perfect entente between the music and this exceptional instrument by Dulcken." Given the stature of Italian music in the Baroque era, it is not surprising to find a vein of Italian musical style running through the keyboard works of Johann Sebastian Bach. The young Bach took the latest styles and clichés from Vivaldi and Albinoni and studied the music of Frescobaldi and Corelli for counterpoint and structure. Many of the forms in which he worked – including the fantasia, aria, toccata and fugue – were transplanted from Italy during the seventeenth century to find new roots north of the Alps. The pieces recorded here span Bach’s entire working life and show how these stock ideas profoundly influenced all the genres in which he worked. | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

| | | J.S Bach: The Inventions
“As close to how I would choose to hear [the music] as I have yet had the pleasure of doing” Gramophone Magazine “Angela Hewitt's approach may be gleaned from her refreshingly lucid annotation, or simply by listening to what she does. 'A skilful player can [bring out the different voices] with different colours' and 'To be capable of producing a true legato without using the pedal will serve a pianist well in any repertoire.' She puts her fingers where her thoughts are. She never upsets the balance of the lines that it's in the nature of the harpsichord to yield, and her economy with the sustaining pedal helps preserve their clarity. The two- and three-part Inventions are treated as music in their own right, not simply as invaluable exercises; each is given its distinctive character, with a wonderful variety of sensitive touch and shapely rubato that never threatens to become anachronistic. Her readings of the C minor Fantasia and the Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue are as eloquent and stimulating as any yet recorded by a harpsichordist.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
