“All three quartets are in the usual fourmovement form but they contain many surprises: in No 1, the false recapitulation in the first movement, the dark modulations in the following sonata-form Allegretto and the Hungarian gipsy flavour (anticipated in the Minuet) and mischievousness of the final rondo. No 2 has a rhapsodic fiddler in its second movement, a nostalgic minuet with an extraordinarily anguished trio, and an Adagio finale in which a Presto section turns out to be no more than an episode. A notable feature of No 3 is its ternary-form Largo cantabile, the centre of which is more like a mini-concerto for the first violin; 'Scotch snaps' pervade the Minuet, and pedal points the finale. The performances and the recording are superb, marked by unanimity, fine tone, suppleness of phrasing, and acute dynamic shaping; in the second movement of No 1 there are hushed passages whose homogeneity and quality of sound are both quite remarkable. Overall, this recording is irresistible.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Haydn: String Quartets, Op. 54, Nos. 1-3
Pecuniary difficulties seem to have been at the root of the six quartets which Haydn began composing in the early summer of 1788. Normally meticulous and thoughtful in his work, Haydn here showed himself singulary capable of swift, instinctive writing. He went straight to the heart of the problem, concentrating his efforts and distilling music from sudden flashes of inspiration. “These are robust yet tender readings by one of France's premiere quartets, cleanly recorded. A good opportunity to revisit Haydn's Op. 54 No. 2, one of his boldest structures.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2012 **** | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |

| | | Haydn: String Quartets, Op. 54
The Sacconi Quartet's first release on their own label, voted RECORDING OF THE MONTH by MusicWeb International. This CD features Haydn's masterful opus 54 quartets complete. Written for virtuoso violinist and friend of Haydn's Johann Tost, these quartets feature florid and virtuosic writing for all four parts – truly a conversation between four musical voices. “The Sacconis seem to perfectly understand every nuance, find exactly the right tempo for each movement . . . they play with a verve and style which is perfect for this composer.” MusicWeb International. This outstanding performance from the young Sacconi Quartet captures Haydn at his best, from the breezy, energetic opening of quartet op54/1, the high spirits of the first movement of op54/2, the tragic and sparse second movement, and the passionate and free op54/3. The sumptuous artwork is based on an original painting by Neil Canning, providing the first in a series of cover images for the Sacconi's recordings. This CD contains three complete quartets (op54/1, op54/2, op54/3) by the “Father of the string quartet”, Haydn, with a total playing time of 63mins. | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Haydn - String Quartets Volume 10
The tenth of eleven volumes; the last set, of Op.76 is due to be released in May Latest critical research into the manuscripts has been incorporated within the parts used The Buchberger Quartet has attracted considerable critical attention and acclaim for their Haydn recordings; Haydn’s music has been central to the quartet’s repertoire since its establishment by Hubert Buchberger over 20 years ago. These recordings are the culmination of years of practical study and reflection This painstaking complete cycle of Haydn’s quartets nears its climax with some of the most brilliant, quirky and virtuosic examples of the genre. It may have been the extraordinary success of the symphonies he wrote for the brilliant orchestra of the Loge Olympique that prompted Haydn to conceive hisnew quartets for the Germanborn Parisian publisher Jean-Georges Sieber. Haydn knew well the Parisian predilection for soloistic display, evinced in symphonic music by the great popularity in France of the ‘symphonie concertante’ and in chamber music by the genre ‘quatuor brillant’. He was able to develop his new quartets along the same lines without any sacrifice of complexity or depth. But virtuosity is never remotely an end in itself. Indeed, in the C major Quartet, Op.54 No.2, especially, it becomes a key element in music of astonishing force and rhetorical boldness: in the spacious opening movement, with its wide tonal reach, and almost orchestral depth of sonority; and in the C minor Adagio, where the first violin weaves wild, gypsy-style fantasies above the brooding chorale-like theme in the lower voices. Taken together, both sets exhibit qualities of experimentation, gratifying instrumental virtuosity and dramatic expressiveness, especially in the slow movements, that make them a constant source of delight and satisfaction. | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

| | | Haydn: String Quartets
This Haydn recording by young Modigliani Quartet brings together three of the mature quartets by the composer regarded as the creator of the genre. The Modigliani Quartet was formed in 2003 and has become one of the most praised and best considered French chamber music groups, winning the 2006 Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York. They studied with the Ysaye quartet at the Paris Conservatoire, attended masterclasses with Walter Levin and Gyorgy Kurtag through Pro Quartet in Paris and have been invited by the Artemis Quartet to work with them in Berlin. “With its immense musical gifts, this foursome has the potential to someday reach the top echelon” The Washington Post “The young French musicians who make up the Quatuor Modigliani relish their Haydn, as the performances of these three works... demonstrate. At first, I wondered if they were sufficiently alive to Haydn’s humour — until the leader made the grace-note figure in the finale of the Sunrise bray like a donkey. The range of dynamics and colour is wide, the rhythmic tension and drive, in the Rider’s finale and elsewhere, superb. They also give the music space, in the Rider’s visionary slow movement and in the deceptively leisurely opening of the Sunrise.” Sunday Times, 13th July 2008 **** “Refreshing to find this young, rising French string quartet, just five years old, exploring the Haydn treasure chest. To the three mature works chosen (the Sunrise quartet, the Rider, and Op 54 No 1) they bring a crisp attack, congenial eloquence and technical refinement. It’s easy to find Haydn the experimenter here. Harder to spot the composer’s smiles and natural wit. If only the Modiglianis would lighten their touch; then we’d be in Haydn heaven.” The Times, 25th July 2008 *** “These musicians ooze musical insight, unanimity and polish.” The Strad, October 2008 “these are remarkably perceptive, stylish and penetrating readings that give this glorious music its full due. For a group that has been in existence for only five years this is an especially impressive achievement.” International Record Review | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |
