| | | Les Ballets Russes Vol. 5
This CD continues this very successful series. The Three Cornered Hat is one of De Falla’s most beautiful works and is presented here in its entirety. Prokofiev’s Tale of the Buffoon is a richly melodic work and has a typical folkloric quality as well as burlesque elements. “Weighty and unhurried, it has a confident feel for the dance-rhythms and a rubato that springs from the musical moment...Bollon's pacing allows space for well-judged accents and plenty of characterful phrasing from the strings and several woodwind principals.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2010 **** | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | Prokofiev - Suites
The music from The Buffoon is complemented here by two further colourful suites, that from the opera The Love for Three Oranges and the lesser-known, late Waltz Suite, which brings together music from the opera War and Peace, the ballet Cinderella and the film Lermontov. “Prokofiev’s ballet score [The Buffoon] was written for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, but it’s doubtful that any ballet company ever has danced to such vivid, raucous playing as Järvi inspires in this concert suite. Chandos has blessed the Scottish National Orchestra with bright, airy, near demonstration quality sounds, and Järvi provides an enthusiastic reading that sparkles with an abundance of characterful wit and dances with good humour.” High Performance Review | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. Between February 1966 and January 1969 he made a series of 9 LP recordings for Decca. This small legacy already gives a clear indication of Abbado’s musical sympathies and the range of repertory he was conducting in the concert hall and on record, and which would continue to characterize his future career. This set brings together Abbado’s complete Decca studio recordings for the first time. |
