 | Haydn in Paris
The programme for the Concert Spirituel given on 13 April 1784 lists 'a symphony in which the players leave, by Haydn', whilst an article published in the Mercure de France provides definite confirmation that it was the symphony that we know as the 'Farewell' Symphony. We cannot know how this score made its way to Paris, but Haydn and his music were extremely popular there. The rival to the Concert Spirituel, the Concert de la loge Olympique, commissioned the six 'Paris' symphonies the following year. “Guy van Waas reinforces the Haydn parallel by taking Kraus's slow movement quite perkily, where the marking Andante un poco largo implies a slightly more reflective tempo. That proviso apart, he directs his responsive period band in a spirited, crisply articulated performance, bringing a fiery sweep to the first movement's development and a cussed energy to the quick-march finale. The flanking Haydn symphonies... are enjoyable, too, with lithe rhythms, transparent textures (Haydn's delicious bassoon-writing always clearly audible in La Reine) and shrewdly judged speeds... With first-rate recorded sound, this is a disc unlikely to disappoint anyone who fancies this particular offbeat selection of symphonies.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2009 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. | Haydn & Yun - Farewell
The first New Series release by the Munich Chamber Orchestra under its new artistic director, Alexander Liebreich, is a striking coupling of two minor-key Haydn symphonies – the first on the label – with the melodious Chamber Symphony I by Korean composer Isang Yun. Haydn’s Symphony No 39 and the famous ‘Farewell’ Symphony (No 45) are played with vitality and subtleness while the similarly scored Yun work is a particular favourite of the conductor. | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

“Recordings of the Concerto have tended to be with either harpsichord or modern grand. …van Immerseel makes a persuasive case for the fortepiano, with its silvery treble and capacity for delicate dynamic nuances. Abetted by fizzing orchestral playing, he relishes the zest and wit of the outer movements and used the fortepiano's moderator stop to enhance the veiled poetry of the Adagio. Van Immerseel and his orchestra bring the same energy and textural clarity to the two symphonies.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2004 **** | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |
