Considered by both critics and public as one of the greatest tenors of the 20th century, Jussi Björling left behind a vast recorded legacy. This seventh volume in the Jussi Björling Collection features popular Swedish patriotic and romantic songs spanning Björling’s entire career.

Tonerna (Music), generally presented as ‘Visions’ in Björling’s recitals outside Sweden, was one of the most popular items in his repertoire, often used as an encore. Till havs (Towards the Sea), a cheerful evocation of the pleasures of sailing, was another great favourite on the recital programmes of the singer, whose devotion to boating and fishing in the Stockholm archipelago was well-known.

Land, du välsignade (Thou Blessed Country) is the patriotic song most generally associated with Jussi Björling in Sweden today.

“A singer whose art, as well as his voice, placed him among the century’s finest.” Gramophone

This month is an excellent one for Björling fans. This collection is a treasury of rare performances from the US and Sweden and includes previously unreleased material. There is commentary and interviews, as well as Art and popular songs, Arias and duets and there are many guest artists such as Licia Albanese, Anna Lisa Björling and Renata Tebaldi.

“Björling recorded [Lensky's aria] many times but never, I think, so poignantly as here. As a prologue to this year's centenary celebrations the album is a worthy offering and this track an especially moving example of the great tenor's art at its best.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2011

Nämner du Sverige (If You Mention Sweden)

and Swedish folksongs

This 5 CD set covers the best of Björling’s EMI solo recordings and includes highlights from the three complete operas:

CD 1 contains Opera and Oratorio Arias and Songs in their original language recorded between 1936 and 1941.

CD 2 covers similar repertoire from 1941 to 1950.

CD 3 goes back to the period from 1929 when Björling was still a local Swedish artist and recorded all his material in Swedish. The CD opens with the two recently discovered test recordings that Björling made for EMI Sweden on 4 September 1929: ‘For You Alone’ and ‘Mattinata’, both sung in Swedish.

CD 4 contains a selection of Lieder and Songs, all sung in their original language, recorded between 1939 and 1959.

CD 5 contains a generous selection of highlights from Björling’s three complete EMI operas: La bohème, Pagliacci and Madama Butterfly. He is partnered in all three recordings by the soprano Victoria de los Angeles. All tracks, except those from Pagliacci and Madama Butterfly on CD 5, have been transferred and digitally remastered at Abbey Road Studios from the best available source material in the EMI Archives by the award-winning audio restoration engineer Andrew Walter.
