Hélène Grimaud: Résonance

Hélène Grimaud: Résonance

Bartók:

Romanian Folk Dances for piano, Sz. 56, BB 68

Berg:

Piano Sonata, Op. 1

Liszt:

Piano Sonata in B minor, S178

Mozart:

Piano Sonata No. 8 in A minor, K310

After a brief absence from the concert platform, Hélène Grimaud is back and presenting a brand new solo recital programme, which she will take on a world-wide tour during the upcoming concert season.

The pianist has conceived another programme of works spanning a wide range of emotions and styles, yet all linked by their origin in that singular musical line of succession: the great composers of the Austro-Hungarian empire. Her new album bears the title Résonance, reflecting Grimaud’s imaginative approach to this stimulating compilation of masterpieces.

Hélène Grimaud brings all her artistic maturity and a perfect balance between intellect and emotion to bear on highly dramatic sonatas by Mozart – the A minor K.310 – Liszt and Berg, leavened by Bartók’s irresistible Romanian Folk Dances.

For Grimaud the keystone here is Alban Berg’s hyper-charged, ultra-romantic Opus 1. In this highly concentrated work, the fascinating interrelationships, resonances, between the composers and pieces are summarized and condensed. “This is a music drama in the miniature form of a single-movement sonata,” comments Grimaud, “a maximum of expression that seems to emanate directly from the heart – contained within a piece of incredibly clear structure.”

“The best is Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances — a pungent coda” The Times, 20th November 2010 ***

“Mozart's A minor Sonata comes through the Grimaud experience much the best. Her booklet interview gives an intriguing view of the composer...and her way of bringing out the music's dramatic, pre-Beethoven manner convinces strongly...In Liszt's Sonata she deploys her technical command with total fearlessness” BBC Music Magazine, January 2011 ***

“This richly varied selection of works...opens with probably the most powerful of Mozart's two minor-key sonatas and Grimaud's interpretation is suitably involved and full-blooded...Her ardour and romanticism are entirely suited to the Berg and Liszt Sonatas: the technical challenges are effortlessly overcome and the tonal architecture is clearly paramount.” International Record Review, December 2010

“The Liszt Piano Sonata...is given a powerful and fluent reading that gets to the heart of the piece...skip the Mozart, sample the Berg and revel in the outstanding performance of the Liszt and the delightful Bartok.” Classic FM Magazine, February 2011 ***

Jitka Cechová – Live at the Rudolfinum

Jitka Cechová – Live at the Rudolfinum

Brahms:

Piano Sonata No. 3 in F minor, Op. 5

Liszt:

Piano Sonata in B minor, S178

Mephisto Waltz No. 1

Recorded live at the Dvorák Hall of the Rudolfinum, Prague, on March 31, 2001 (Brahms) and on March 22, 2008 (Liszt). New recording / Live

Following the series of four CDs featuring Smetana piano works (Supraphon SU3841-44), the ebullient pianist and buttress of the highly acclaimed Smetana Trio, Jitka Cechová, decided to “take up the gauntlet” with a live concert recording, which deprives the performer of the comfort of detailed corrections in the studio. Owing to their sheer difficulty, Brahms’ and Liszt’s compositions are a great challenge for any renowned pianist.

The third (and final) sonata created by the 20-year-old Brahms and the one and only sonata by the 42-yearold Liszt originated in the very same year. Whereas the former met with a significant response, the latter had to struggle for more than half a century to gain a firm foothold in concert programmes. Today, both of the pieces are deservedly ranked among the apexes of Romantic piano music.

In Jitka Cechová’s masterful and inspired interpretation, enhanced by the splendid acoustics of Prague’s Rudolfinum, the recording is a truly fantastic experience.

“Cechová's interpretation comes over as rather lyrical and thoughtful, not seeking to overawe but to identify the emotional bedrock from which the massive superstructure arises... As far as wild bravura goes, she shows herself able to give her all with a barnstorming but rather choppy account of Mephisto Waltz No. 1” BBC Music Magazine, October 2010 ****

“A romantic virtuoso who is never dull, her playing is fiercely energised and enthusiastic.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2010

Nikolai Demidenko plays Liszt

Nikolai Demidenko plays Liszt

Liszt:

Piano Sonata in B minor, S178

Legendes (2) for piano, S. 175

Scherzo and March, S. 177

“Even in an impossibly competitive field Demidenko's Liszt Sonata stands out among the most imperious and articulate. His opening is precisely judged and once the Sonata is under its inflammatory way his virtuosity is of a kind to which few other pianists could pretend. The combination of punishing weight and a skittering, light-fingered agility makes for a compulsive vividness yet his economy in the first cantando espressivo, sung without a trace of luxuriance or indulgence, is no less typical. There are admittedly times when he holds affection at arm's length, but just as you're wondering why he commences the central Andante so loudly he at once withdraws into a wholly apposite remoteness or reticence. The final climax, too, is snapped off not only with a stunning sense of Lisztian drama but also with an even truer sense and understanding of Liszt's score and instructions.
Demidenko's couplings are no less autocratic, with a capacity to make seemingly arbitrary ideas sound unarguable. His Légendes are far from benign, yet his tautness and graphic sense of their poetic power carry their own authority. He's in his element in the Scherzo and March's diablerie, music which, coming after the two Légendes, affects one like an upside-down crucifix, or some dark necromancy. The recording is outstanding.”
