This is a very welcome reissue (the first time on CD) of Rozhdestvensky conducting the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra in the benchmark recordings of the complete Sibelius Symphonies. Rozhdestvensky writes: "Sibelius has a strong connection with the Russian melos which was noted by many researchers of his musical legacy”.

Gustavo Dudamel conducts Bruckner, Sibelius & Nielsen

Gustavo Dudamel conducts Bruckner, Sibelius & Nielsen

Bruckner:

Symphony No. 9 in D Minor

Nielsen:

Symphony No. 5, Op. 50 (FS97)

Symphony No. 4, Op. 29 (FS76) 'The Inextinguishable'

Sibelius:

Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 43

Gustavo Dudamel catapulted to international prominence in a remarkably short time as a conducting talent and was named Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra’s Music Director in 2006. This 3-CD project of recent live recordings features Bruckner’s majestic Symphony No. 9, Sibelius’s uplifting Symphony no. 2, and Nielsen’s turbulent Symphony no. 4 “The Inextinguishable” and no. 5.

“It’s Dudamel’s adherence to the ‘golden rule’ of Nielsen interpretation – to never play it safe – that helps him most...in music that’s so rarely recorded well, these are live performances to reach for when you need to remind yourself just how brilliantly impolite Nielsen really is.” bbc.co.uk, 24th August 2011

“for all the oddities, these are symphonies that Dudamel has clearly come to love, which is in itself reassuring. And sometimes he’s admirably synchronised with the composer’s flow. The finale to Sibelius’s Second doesn’t crumble into fits and starts but grows organically; and I admire his passion in Nielsen’s Fifth. If Dudamel doesn’t think deeply, his rumbustious ways at least freshen the air. Don’t file this set on the Class A shelf; put it on the one marked “Lively Curios”.” The Times, 16th September 2011 ***

“[in the Sibelius] Dudamel places emphasis on the dark and the stoical. Like Sibelius, he has a wonderful feel for the structural accelerando, and for dramatic silences and hushed responses...Dudamel shows a fine instinct for Nielsen, too, though not as yet an understanding of how to achieve maximum effect without exaggerated gestures.. .[in the Bruckner] Dudamel grasps the essence of musical drama based on faith and doubt” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2011

Paavo Berglund was born in Helsinki, Finland, on 14th April 1929 and died there on 25th January 2012.

He studied the violin and by 15 had decided to make his career in music gaining experience from playing and restaurants and dance orchestras. Formal study was taken at the Sibelius Academy in his home city and in Vienna and Salzburg. In 1949 he joined the first violin section of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, unique in being accommodated for seating as he was left-handed.

He was greatly impressed by Furtwängler when he brought the Vienna Philharmonic to Helsinki and he was soon studying in Vienna where his friends in the orchestras allowed him access to rehearsals and recording sessions. He formed his own chamber orchestra in 1949 and co-founded the Helsinki Chamber Orchestra four years later. In 1955 he started his long association with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra first as Associate Conductor and then Chief Conductor.

It was a series of Sibelius Centenary Concerts in 1965 that brought him to Bournemouth, becoming the principal conductor of the city’s Symphony Orchestra in 1972 and over the next seven years made numerous recordings including the Symphonies of Sibelius together with many of the tone poems.

Sibelius, born in 1865, became Finland’s leading composer and his works have attracted numerous major non-Finnish conductors to programme them in their concerts – Beecham, Karajan, Barbirolli and Rattle are just four of many. Berglund went even further by preparing Sibelius’s early Kullervo for recording which he duly did in Bournemouth. This collection features all the numbered symphonies together with a number of tone poems ranging from his early Karelia Suite to his final completed work, Tapiola, and is truly a magnificent introduction to this masterly composer.
