José Carreras (tenor), Vincenzo Scalera, Ronald Schneider (piano)

Following his recovery from leukaemia in 1988 the great Spanish tenor José Carreras performed a series of comeback concerts, and this recording presents a collection of excerpts from these very special events. It includes not only operatic arias but also art-songs and items from Zarzuela, revealing the whole broad range of his repertoire.

Spanish tenor José Carreras unquestionably numbers among the most important tenors of the second half of the twentieth century, yet in the consciousness of many people his biography is not only marked by his outstanding artistic achievements. The apparent tragic end of the career of the then 41-year-old singer as a result of a life-threatening illness, his triumph over death, and the entirely unexpected re-commencement of his career as singer have become just as much a part of public memory as the appearances with his tenor colleagues Domingo and Pavarotti who, as ‘The Three Tenors’, delighted an audience of millions throughout the world. José Carerras went on to establish a foundation that has collected millions of euros used to alleviate the suffering of the sick and provide scientists with financial support for their research into leukaemia.

La Taberna del Puerto – ‘No puede ser’

Alfredo Kraus (tenor) with Emiko Suga (soprano), Edelmiro Arnaltes (piano) & Asier Polo (cello)

Recorded at Tokyo Bunkamura Orchard Hall, 15th June 1996

World première recording.

This 1996 Tokyo recital is a celebration of the distinguished Spanish tenor Alfredo Kraus’s 40 year career.

After warming his voice with two classical arias transcribed by Parisotti, Kraus launches into an anthology of music from the French, Spanish and Italian repertoires. The recital includes a duet from the first act of Lucia di Lammermoor and the famous aria "Pourquoi me réveiller?" from Massenet's Werther, an opera in which Kraus was considered an outstanding interpreter of the title role.

Each and every piece is managed with extreme elegance, noble aplomb and ease, qualities that he attained through a formidable technique and a careful career pacing. At sixty nine Kraus sings without any apparent effort and with that aristocratic nonchalance that was one of the most charming aspects of his style.

On the evening of July 7, 1990, an `impossible dream' came true: the three greatest tenors of the day joined forces with an orchestra of 200 musicians against a backdrop of the majestic scenery of ancient Rome.

In the famous Baths of Caracalla in Rome, on a brilliant starlit night with a full moon rising, Placido Domingo, José Carreras, and Luciano Pavarotti, together with Maestro Zubin Mehta, presented an evening of arias, songs and medleys which was unique in musical history.

For the 6,000 fortunate people who crowded into Caracalla that evening, it was an experience never to be forgotten. This recording is a document of that special performance, recorded live on the occasion, as a souvenir for music-lovers everywhere.

The original 1990 digital multi-track recording has been newly re-mastered, maintaining the recorded sound in the digital domain throughout the mixing, editing and CD transfer stages, giving an increased fidelity and presence to this unique recording.
