Matthew Owens, currently Organist and Master of the Choristers at Wells Cathedral, continues his survey of Johann Pachelbel's organ music on British instruments. For volume II, Owens has opted for the Frobenius organ at Edinburgh's Canongate Kirk, renowned for its intimacy and fine pedigree; its sophisticated tones and colours are heard here in the service of Pachelbel's devout and wide-ranging inspiration. “No reservations at all about Matthew Owens's first-rate playing. His articulation and ornamentation are always stylistically appropriate and he has the knack of choosing tempi which feel exactly right.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2008 | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |

| | | Pachelbel - Organ Works Volume 1
Matthew Owens (Ahrend Organ of the Reid Concert Hall, University of Edinburgh) Revered teacher, organ virtuoso, master of counterpoint, devotee of the chorale, enthusiast for the Italian forms of composition, pathfinder and worthy predecessor of Bach: such was Johann Pachelbel. Matthew Owens presents a selection of Pachelbel’s works on the UK’s only Ahrend Organ, housed in the Reid Concert Hall at the University of Edinburgh. It is an instrument of exceptional refinement; the voicing is direct and clear and yet full of subtleties; This recording presents a completely satisfying union of instrument, repertoire and performer. “The UK's only Ahrend proves itself an articulate advocate for Pachelbel … vivid recorded sound adds to the pleasure” Choir & Organ, September 2007 “… performer, instrument and music all combine to great effect” The Organ, August-October 2007 “This rigorously compiled tribute to Johann Pachelbel, featuring former Edinburgh cathedral organist Matthew Owens, opts sensibly for the German Baroque-style Ahrend organ in Edinburgh University’s Reid Concert Hall, where its relative isolation and direct acoustics provide an excellent recording environment. Owen’s dynamically articulated performances and sensibility of phrasing continually open the ears to the inventiveness of Pachelbel’s Italian-inspired music.” The Scotsman | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |

“Naxos's Organ Encyclopedia series marches gloriously on with this first volume devoted to Johann Pachelbel's works for the instrument. Pachelbel was no one-tune composer; nor was his work merely a dry run for Bach. Here, Wolfgang Rubsam plays a well-varied selection of fantasias, toccatas, ricercares, chorale preludes and ciaconas. The choral preludes-five examples-are remarkably highly developed pieces; the toccatas imposing, florid declamations over resounding pedal notes. But for me the highlights are the two ciaconas, both in D minor, real gems that bring out the best of this composer's fertile imagination. Rubsam plays beautifully, varying his registrations carefully, giving the music the space it demands. Buffs will like to know that the organ is that at Weissenan, built by Johann Nepomuk Holzhey between 1785 and 1787. It sounds magnificent.” Sunday Times, 16th April 2000 | | | (also available to download from $6.00) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. (Available now to download.) |
