| | | Chopin: Waltzes & Impromptus
Reissue Producer and Restoration Engineer: Mark Obert-Thorn This volume continues the Naxos series of Rubinstein’s ‘middle period’ Chopin recordings, begun with the Piano Concertos (8111296) and followed by the Polonaises (8111346). Because the HMV/Victor catalogue already included Cortot’s complete traversal of the Waltzes (8111035), Rubinstein set down only two of them on shellac before making this complete recording in 1954. He had made previous recordings for RCA of two of the Impromptus (Opp. 51 and 66) before taping the four new versions heard on this disc. “this earlier version is wistful and whimsical, and impeccably tasteful.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2011 **** “Try Waltzes Nos 3, 7 and 13...and you will realise that no other pianist has captured more subtly Chopin's unique blend of classical bias and romantic freedom. Here in particular you note an elegance and insiunation devoid of all sentimentality, neurosis or self-serving idiosyncrasy.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2011 | | | (also available to download from $9.00) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. Janina Fialkowska is a regular guest soloist with the world’s most prestigious orchestras and has worked with conductors such as Haitink, Metha, Solti and Slatkin. She was born in Montreal amd her career was launched by Arthur Rubinstein after her prize winning performances at the first piano competition held in his name in 1974. “There is a new and unmistakable joie de vivre, an almost improvisatory abandon and, frequently, a sense of sheer unbuttoned fun not normally associated with either Fialkowska of Chopin...every subdivision is clear, shapely and dynamic.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2010 ***** “As in the past everything is scrupulously worked and considered...In her curtain-raiser, the C sharp minor Polonaise, she is as keenly responsive to its robust clarion call to attention as she is to the central meno mosso's melting lyricism.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2010 “Fialkowska reveals herself as a great Chopinian poet who can make the piano sing and dance. Her immaculately judged rubato never sounds calculated, but respects the bel canto inspiration of Chopin’s haunting melodies...This is some of Chopin’s greatest music and the playing is sheer bliss.” Sunday Times, 16th May 2010 ***** “Fialkowska's affinity with the Romantic repertoire shines through in this live recording. These are sensitive and expressive performances.” The Independent on Sunday, 12th December 2010 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. Josef Hofmann was one of the greatest pianists of any age. His unique abilities incorporated a technique second to none, and a clarity and pureness of tone that has probably never been heard since his death. Always in total command of everything he played, Hofmann presented each work with an impression of complete facility of execution. All works recorded in New York City “The recessed, wrong-end-of-a-telescope acoustic recordings are still truthful enough to display Hofmann's mesmerisingly fabulous virtuosity in Liszt's Waldesrauchen and Tarantella, and his full, rounded tone.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2008 ***** “Josef Hofmann is among music’s most jealously guarded legends. For his admirers (and they included Anton Rubinstein and Rachmaninov) he could do no wrong, and those fortunate enough to have heard him live during his heyday in America can reminisce by the hour, recalling unforgettable performances of a vast repertoire ranging from Beethoven’s Op. 111 Sonata to the major works of the great romantics.” Gramophone Magazine | | | (also available to download from $9.00) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | Frédéric Chopin Edition Volume 2 - Waltzes
“Have you ever imagined what Chopin might sound like when played in the style of Glenn Gould's Bach? Well, here's your chance to find out! Eugéne Mursky's highly analytical, compulsively detailed performances X-ray the works down to their linear skeletons, uncovering inner voices and hidden melodies within flurries of passagework that even Josef Hofmann and Shura Cherkassky couldn't divine. Forget about narrative sweep, rhythmic life, heartfelt lyricism, and any other characteristics that characterize "normal" Chopin playing” Classics Today | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
