Timothy Wakerell (organ)

St.Paul’s Cathedral, unlike most Cathedrals, does not just possess one instrument to lead the services but several housed within different parts of this vast building! This CD is the first recording of the new William Drake organ in the OBE Chapel (2012) - his last complete new instrument. The integrity of the new organ stems from Drake’s own cosmopolitan-eclecticism: a recipient of the German Certificate of Master Organ Builders, his opus list owes as much to Teutonic rigour as to English organs of the 18th and early 19th centuries.

At the time of the recording Timothy Wakerell was Assistant Organist at St. Paul’s; he is now Assistant at New College, Oxford where he is considered to be in the forefront as one of the finest organists of his generation.

John O'Donnell (harpsichord)

From the House of Master Bohm presents spirited and musicalogically authoritative performances of Georg Böhm's keyboard suites and chorale partitas by the renowned Australian Bach scholar John O'Donnell. He imbues the exuberant dance movements in Böhm’s suites with rustic energy, lilt and swing.

In the suites' slow movements O'Donnell demonstrates the uncanny ability to make his plucked instrument sing, the oft expressed ideal of centuries of the finest instrumentalists.

In achieving this ideal he is aided by the angelic resonance of his 1995 William Bright Harpsichord. And Böhm’s extravagant “stylus phantasticus” passages, features of his choral partitas, are executed by the harpsichordist with Dionysian sparkle.

The whole of O’Donnell’s performance is informed by a life of scholarship at the cutting edge of early music performance. His performance eloquently articulates how much more that there is in Böhm’s music than the mere notes on the page.

The earthy quality characteristic of many of Böhm's pieces harks back to the instrumental dances of earlier times, yet his suites of dance movements also look forward to their zenith in the keyboard suites of J S Bach. Böhm’s music comes down to us almost exclusively via manuscript copies from the Bach family’s collection, at least one piece having been copied in the house of master Böhm by a 15-year-old Johann Sebastian Bach.

Martin Neu (Ahrend-Organ, Herzogenaurach)

In his youth, J.S. Bach came across two North German musicians who considerably influenced him: Georg Böhm and Buxtehude. Their stylistic influence on Bach can be seen clearly in his early works. This SACD demonstrates the musical connection in a selection of pieces. Formal parallels and harmonic borrowings made by Bach from the North German masters become apparent. In this recording, Martin Neu plays the Ahrend organ in Herzogenaurach. The organ builder Jürgen Ahrend from Leer, North Germany is reckoned to be one of the leading organ builders and restorers, and who has gained an international reputation particularly for his consistent restoration work and his great artistry in voicing. The Ahrend organ in Herzogenaurach was built by his son Hendrik Ahrend who continues the tradition of Ahrend organs.

“the most pleasurable highlights are the three delightful pieces by Georg Böhm...usually played on the harpsichord, Böhm's Capriccio in D sounds quite at ease on the organ...Although this new Bavarian organ has a modest specification on paper, such is the variety of its timbral beauty that the ear never tires.” Gramophone Magazine, February 2011
