Denis Kozhukhin "is clearly a formidable pianist with strong interpretative ideas to match his fine technique" said the Guardian of his debut recording of Prokofiev’s three ‘War Sonatas’.

"A stunning tour de force" said the BBC Music Magazine reviewing the same CD, "I’ve never heard so much revelatory detail in Prokofiev’s triptych of dark and painful masterpieces. Kozhukhin has a way of bring out the details of the inner parts, or even a usually inconsequential – seeming bass line, that highlights the drama instead of detracting from it…" For his second ONYX CD, Kozhukhin turns to Joseph Haydn, whose piano sonatas have been unjustly neglected and yet contain some of his most forward-looking music. In the selection here, the worlds of gallant classical style rub shoulders with sturm und drang, and in the major D work the influence Haydn had upon his wayward and headstrong young pupil Beethoven is clear.

“Kozhukhin proves himself an incisive and thoughtful interpreter of Haydn. His grace, lyrical fluency and sensitivity to every aspect of these works is impressive, humour never overdone, with a lithe energy throughout.” Classical Music, January 2015

“[Kozhukhin] is really at his best in Hob.XVI/24 (No. 39), spaciously expressive in the Allegro first movement, melancholy in the Baroque-type Adagio and pointedly rhythmic in the final Presto.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2015

“On the face of it, these are rather 'straight' readings, meticulously fingered and judiciously paced; Kozhukin never rushes detail or stabs at the keyboard for emphasis...Yet his apparent restraint discloses an intent thoughtfulness and a subtlety of dynamic shading through which the highly contrasted characters of Haydn's various movements emerge all the more compellingly.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2015 ****

“exquisitely refined playing...about as close to the perfect ideal in this music as it is possible to imagine...A defining moment in Classical pianism.” International Record Review, March 2015

“Hamelin kicks off with the late C major Sonata, H50, nailing his virtuoso credentials firmly to the mast with a mercurial account of its opening movement. Some may prefer Schiff's more measured approach, but Hamelin's playing is dazzling, and his 'presto' finale is no less witty than Schiff's.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2007 *****

“Hamelin’s gift for making light of complex textures and technically taxing writing is here harnessed to music of Classical clarity and economy. It is without doubt one of his finest achievements—and that’s saying something. This cleverly chosen selection of diverse character is played with masterly resourcefulness. Hamelin can do deadpan humour (the finale of No 40) and brilliant note-spinning (No 32) like few others, but also finds a truly affecting wistfulness in some of the slow movements. Superbly recorded, this is a life-enhancing release” Classic FM Magazine

“The ever-phenomenal Marc-André Hamelin breaks out into the light with a two-disc set of Haydn sonatas … these are astonishing performances … Hyperion’s sound and presentation are, as always, immaculate” Gramophone Magazine

“For long confined to the by-ways of the repertoire, the ever-phenomenal Marc-André Hamelin now breaks out into the light with a twodisc set of Haydn sonatas. And unlike Haydn who considered himself less than a wizard of the keyboard, Hamelin is a prodigious virtuoso. Here, he remains one, in a full if not entirely inclusive sense, often susceptible to Haydn's wit, to vertiginous music which can veer to the right just when you expect it to turn left, and vice versa.
He is brilliantly alert to the first Menuetto from No 43, to a dance at once perky and serious, almost as if the composer with his toy fanfares was trying unsuccessfully to keep a straight face. And he can be hauntingly limpid and serene, as in the alternately calm and troubled Adagio from No 46. However, in No 23 one longs for Hamelin to relax his virtuoso prowess.
Here, there is an unmistakable sense of hurry, of Haydn's riches glimpsed rather than savoured, of a composer's piquancy nearly bustled out of existence. Others, too, have achieved greater grandeur in the final E flat Sonata or made the storm clouds scud more menacingly across the B minor Sonata's finale (Andsnes, Ax and, most of all, Brendel). None the less, these are astonishing performances. Hyperion's sound and presentation are, as always, immaculate.”

Francesco Corti (harpsichord)

The harpsichordist Francesco Corti gives us a pre-revolutionary Haydn, very close to Domenico Scarlatti and CPE Bach, marked by the counterpoint of Johann Joseph Fux. The feeling of freedom that he expresses serves wonderfully the musicality of these masterpieces of keyboard music.

Francesco Corti w--as born in Arezzo, Italy, in a musical family in 1984. He studied organ in Perugia, then harpsichord in Geneva and in Amsterdam. First prize winner in the international competition 'Johann Sebastian Bach' Leipzig in 2006, Francesco Corti regularly plays with Les Talens Lyriques [Rousset], Le Concert des Nations (Jordi Savall), Les Musiciens du Louvre [Minkowski], Pulcinella ensemble and Leipzig Baroque Orchestra. His solo recordings include a CD of Louis Couperin Suites, the Partitas by J. S. Bach and the two piano quartets by Mozart recorded on the original instrument owned by the composer, now in Salzburg. This is his first CD for Evidence Classics.

Haydn wrote keyboard sonatas for 'connoisseurs' and 'amateurs' throughout his career. Alternating bread-and-butter work and rich terrains of experimentation, they bear the mark of endlessly renewed invention. Alain Planès offers here a personal selection from Haydn’s output: from the experimental, sometimes anguished pieces of the 'Sturm und Drang'; through the refined and witty galanterie of the 1780’s; to the visionary masterpieces of the late sonatas, he brings out Haydn’s indefatigable spirit of adventure and infinite resource.

Einav Yarden (piano)

The second disc by Einav Yarden on Challenge Classics after, Beethoven/Stravinsky (CC72599), hailed by Washington Post with such words: "She pairs up Beethoven with Stravinsky to striking effect, merging that unlikely couple with imagination and exceptionally vivid playing".

This disc is devoted to rare piano Sonatas by Haydn and in spite of the short span of time of composition, a wide range of moods and techniques are displayed.

“[Yarden] responds to each with great characterfulness…every sonata seems to spring a surprise, not just musically but compositionally…Yarden clearly has much to say in this repertoire, and she’s beautifully recorded, too.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2016
