Gaetano Donizetti

Gaetano Donizetti (Composer)

Born: 29th November 1797, Bergamo

Died: 8th April 1848, Bergamo

Nationality: Italian

Domenico Gaetano Maria Donizetti was an Italian composer, best known for his almost 70 operas. Along with Gioachino Rossini and Vincenzo Bellini, he was a leading composer of the bel canto opera style during the first half of the nineteenth century and a probable influence on other composers such as Giuseppe Verdi. Donizetti was born in Bergamo in Lombardy. At an early age he was taken up by Simon Mayr who enrolled him with a full scholarship in a school which he had set up. There he received detailed musical training.

Interview, Javier Camarena on Signor Gaetano

The Mexican tenor discusses his recent Pentatone album exploring Donizetti's Italian operas (including rarities such as Betly, Maria de Rudenz and Giovedì Grasso), and explains why singing these works leaves him 'feeling satisfied and happy, rather than mentally exhausted!'.

Recording of the Week, Signor Gaetano from Javier Camarena and Gli Originali

On the first of two albums devoted to the many and varied operas of Donizetti, the Mexican tenor brings fresh-faced charm to the comic heroes of L'elisir d'amore and Betly - but also excels in the darker and stormier waters of Roberto Devereux, Caterina Cornaro and Maria de Rudenz.
