Announcement, Gramophone's greatest Beethoven recordings

Gramophone's greatest Beethoven recordingsGramophone have just revealed their list of fifty definitive Beethoven recordings, ranging from Toscanini's legendary Fifth and Seventh Symphonies from the 1930s to Alina Ibragimova and Cédric Tiberghien's recent award-winning live recordings of the Violin Sonatas from the Wigmore Hall.

We were pleased to see a fair few of our own Presto Favourites in among them, including Claudio Abbado's 2010 Fidelio and his 2012 Violin Concerto with Isabelle Faust (which won the Concerto Category at that year's Gramophone Awards), and the late Nikolaus Harnoncourt's complete symphonies with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

You can read full details (including, in most instances, the complete original reviews) of the fifty featured recordings on the Gramophone website; the list is organised by genre (orchestral/concertos, chamber, instrumental, vocal/choral, and opera) and draws on their archive of over 40 000 reviews, taking in Recordings of the Month, Editor's Choices, and of course the Gramophone Awards.
