New UK label launches with album in memory of Peter Maxwell Davies
The late Peter Maxwell Davies leaves, of course, an enormous musical legacy. In November 2016, one more aspect of this legacy will become apparent, as the North York Moors Chamber Music Festival launches its record label, Ayriel Classical, with a special album dedicated to him.
The album takes its title from a song-cycle for baritone, cello soloist and string quartet that Peter wrote especially for the Festival, A Sea of Cold Flame, sung (in what will be its world-premiere recording) by John Savournin with Jamie Walton and the Quartetto di Cremona. This is paired with Britten's Lachrymae performed by Philip Dukes and the Ayriel Ensemble, and the pairing itself book-ended by a Pavan and Galliard by John Dowland, played by lutenist Matthew Wadsworth.
Expect more great, and innovative, chamber music to appear on this label in the future!
