Hi-Res New Releases

A noble and melancholy instrument

Alec Frank-Gemmill and Alasdair Beatson explore the repertoire for horn and piano that emerged during the nineteenth century - an era of huge change in the design of both instruments, which permitted and indeed encouraged experimentation by composers. A selection of contemporary instruments give an excellent feel for the changing sound of this unique chamber combination.

Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde

We've written about Jonas Kaufmann's Herculean Mahler with the Wiener Philharmoniker elsewhere, but it bears reiterating - his colossal achievement in taking on a role normally divided between two voices has to be heard to be believed.

Bach | Beethoven: Fugue

Fascinating string-orchestra arrangements of Beethoven's String Quartet No. 13 and Grosse Fuge, along with excerpts from Bach's Art of Fugue, all played with spirit and emotion by the strings of the Australian Chamber Orchestra under Richard Tognetti.

Peter Donohoe tackles Shostakovich's mighty tribute to JS Bach - a varied and virtuosic exploration of the composer's unique genius, and a side of him that is all too often forgotten among the symphonies and string quartets.

Brahms: String Sextets Nos. 1 & 2

The Capuçon brothers are joined by Christoph Koncz, Gérard Caussé, Marie Chilemme and Clemens Hagen for this enchanting pairing of Brahms's string sextets, recorded live in Aix in 2016.

Wagner: Lohengrin

The RCO build on the success of their acclaimed 2013 Dutchman with this new recording of Lohengrin, with Klaus Florian Vogt in the title-role, Camilla Nylund as Elsa and Katarina Dalayman as Ortrud - and Mark Elder at the helm.

Recent Hi-Res Re-issues

The greatest performances of yesteryear, newly remastered and re-released in Hi-Res.

Beethoven: Triple Concerto for Piano, Violin, and Cello in C major, Op. 56

2017 sees the 10th anniversary of Rostropovich's death (and would have seen his 90th birthday) - and in recognition of this milestone, Warner have reissued a number of his finest recordings. This one sees him join forces with Sviatoslav Richter and David Oistrakh, with Karajan's Berliner Philharmoniker accompanying - a truly all-star performance of Beethoven's Triple Concerto.
