Sam Haywood (piano)

Stanford retained an enthusiasm for the music of Bach throughout his life, and the two sets of ‘Twenty-four Preludes in all the keys for pianoforte’ are a clear homage to Johann Sebastian Bach’s own ‘48’. Sam Haywood, making his second recording for Hyperion, performs his own selection.

The Austrian conductor Karl Böhm is one of the towering conductors of the twentieth century. This nineteen-CD set assembles all the extant recordings he conducted for EMI (notably its German Electrola label) over the period from 1935 to 1949 in Dresden, Berlin, Vienna and London, and includes a number of rarities and the world premiere release of a version of Mozart’s Serenata notturna recorded in Vienna in 1947.

Vladimir Feliauer (King Dodon), Andrei Popov (The Astrologer), Aida Garifullina (Queen of Shemakha), Mariinsky Orchestra & Chorus, Valery Gergiev

A thoroughly Russian composer, Rimsky-Korsakov's music derived much from his country's rich legacy of folk tales, and his lush, exotic orchestration was a strong influence on his student Stravinsky. Completed in 1907, just after the Russo-Japanese war, this opera's depiction of a witless Tsar meant it was initially banned, and Rimsky-Korsakov never saw it performed. Finally staged in 1909, it received its first performance at the Mariinsky in 1919.

Danielle de Niese (Rosina), Alessandro Corbelli (Bartolo), Björn Bürger (Figaro), Taylor Stayton (Almaviva), London Philharmonic Orchestra, Enrique Mazzola (conductor)

The visual sophistication of Annabel Arden’s production serves as a triumphant celebration of Rossini’s musical genius, featuring Danielle de Niese as Rosina, Björn Bürger as Figaro, and an object lesson in comic understatement from Alessandro Corbelli as Dr Bartolo.
