New Release Round-up, New Release Round-up - 24th November 2017

It’s a particularly strong week for DVDs and Blu-rays, with a rare outing for Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tale of Tsar Saltan from the Mariinsky Theatre, Àlex Ollé’s new staging of Der fliegende Holländer (set in contemporary Bangladesh) from the Teatro Real de Madrid, and a starry Figaro from La Scala. Other highlights include the recording debut of a promising new piano trio, a thoughtful tribute to the late Sir John Tavener, and two early 100th birthday-presents to Leonard Bernstein.

The Choir of King's College Cambridge & Britten Sinfonia, Stephen Cleobury

Released in anticipation of next year's Bernstein centenary, this recording offers a rare opportunity to hear one of his best-loved choral works in the composer's own version for choir, organ, percussion and harp.

Available Formats: SACD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Wiener Philharmoniker, Leonard Bernstein

In anticipation of Bernstein's centenary next year, Deutsche Grammophon present his legendary Beethoven cycle in 5.0 Surround Sound, supplemented with transcripts of Bernstein’s introductions to the symphonies from his 1980 TV broadcasts and an essay about Bernstein and Beethoven by Jed Distler.

Voce Chamber Choir, Matthew Barley (cello), Simon Russell Beale (narrator), James Sherlock (organ), Suzi Digby

The title-work (receiving its world premiere recording here) is a setting by Roxanna Panufnik of Tavener's final message to his family before his death in 2013. The album also includes the first recordings of Tavener's Maha Maya and Look in thy Glass, and an improvisation on themes from his works by cellist Matthew Barley.

Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Daniele Gatti

Reviewing the live performance at the Concertgebouw in January of this year, BachTrack observed that ‘It was a true achievement of Daniele Gatti and his Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam that he was capable of finding a new dimension in this familiar music, like the transcendence from the beauty of the Faune…towards the beastly energy of Sacre.’
