Dmitri HvorostovskyA tribute to some of the musicians who died in 2017, including conductors Jiří Bělohlávek, Georges Prêtre and Louis Frémaux, harpsichordist Zuzana Růžičková, tenor Nicolai Gedda, and baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky.

The music is Rodrigo’s farewell from Verdi’s Don Carlo, sung by Hvorostovsky, whose performance of this aria sealed his now-legendary victory at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition in 1989; Verdi’s noble freedom-fighter became one of his signature-roles.

His musical interests include opera, film music, late-Romantic orchestral works (especially Mahler and Richard Strauss), and twentieth-century American composers such as Copland, John Adams, and John Williams. He read Music at Christ Church, Oxford, writing his postgraduate dissertation on the music of Star Wars.
