Recording of the Week BBC Proms 2007
In previous years I've always thought that Summer starts with the First Test at Lords, but with the increasingly busy international cricket schedule this is getting earlier by the year so I should probably revert to summer starting with the first night of the Proms. This year the weather in the UK is even trying to persuade us against that, but with the world’s biggest classical music festival now underway at least we've got nearly two months of great music to enjoy.
And enjoy it we all can, for there are so many ways of listening to the Proms these days there is no excuse not to end the summer feeling enriched and enlightened. Obviously nothing beats going in person, and the great thing is if you haven't bought a ticket in advance it doesn't matter, you can just turn up in good time, sit in the queue for a few hours, and buy a standing place in the arena (you can sit down on the floor unless it is really packed). It is a unique experience and everyone should do it at least once in their lives.
Alternatively, you can listen to all the Proms live on Radio 3. With the BBC’s listen again feature you can listen again to all the proms for up to seven days after broadcast anywhere in the world. And if you live in the UK you can watch a lot of them on television, especially if you have access to BBC 4 (broadcast schedule here).
The first broadcast last night was hugely enjoyable with John Eliot Gardiner and his forces producing a very moving reading of a piece I don't think I knew at all - the Campra Requiem followed by a dazzling performance of various scenes from Rameau’s stage works set to specially created choreography by the Paris-based Compagnie Roussat-Lubek. I have to say I had my doubts before it started but was hooked within minutes. It was really well done and I'm sure brought huge enjoyment to all those watching.
We've also produced a special Proms page on our website, where you can browse available recordings of all the works played and see any other suggested recordings linked to that concert. We'll try and keep about a week ahead. If you have any queries please don't hesitate to ask.
Enjoy the summer.
