Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes was born in Karmøy in 1970 and studied at the Bergen Music Conservatory; he is particularly associated with the music of his compatriot Grieg, having recorded the Piano Concerto with the Bergen Philharmonic when he was just 21 and subsequently revisited it with the Berliner Philharmoniker and Mariss Jansons in 2007 (winning a Gramophone Award in the process). His recording of the Lyric Pieces on Warner Classics also won widespread acclaim, including another Gramophone Award and a Building a Library Top Recommendation; BBC Music Magazine praised his playing for its ‘consummate artistry and insight’ and ‘magisterial pianistic finesse’. His discography also includes The Beethoven Journey (which was Recording of the Year at the 2015 BBC Music Magazine Awards), Rachmaninov concertos with Sir Antonio Pappano and the Berliner Philharmoniker, Mozart piano concertos (directed from the piano) with the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, and numerous chamber-music and song recordings with artists including Ian Bostridge, Marc-André Hamelin, and Christian and Tanja Tetzlaff.
