American soprano Barbara Hendricks was born in Arkansas in 1948 and studied maths and chemistry at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln before enrolling at the Juilliard School of Music, where her teachers included Jennie Tourel. She made her professional debut at Glyndebourne in 1974 in the title-role of Cavalli’s La Calisto, and was soon in demand at the world’s major houses for light lyric roles such as Susanna Le nozze di Figaro, Massenet’s Manon, Ilia (Idomeneo), Anne Trulove (The Rake’s Progress), and Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier).

Her discography includes Clara on Lorin Maazel’s Grammy-winning 1975 recording of Porgy and Bess, the Queen of Sheba on Sir John Eliot Gardiner’s 1985 recording of Handel’s Solomon, Soprano I on Herbert von Karajan’s recording of Mozart’s Mass in C minor, and Sophie on Bernard Haitink’s 1990 recording of Der Rosenkavalier, opposite Kiri Te Kanawa and Anne Sofie von Otter. She has also recorded several acclaimed albums of jazz standards, spirituals and When You Wish Upon a Star (a collection of Disney songs), as well as taking part in the world premieres of works by Tobias Picker, David Del Tredici and Krzysztof Penderecki. Hendricks has been heavily involved in charity and human rights work since the mid-1980s, and was a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador.
