Born in Cornwall in 1949, the English bass-baritone Stephen Varcoe studied at the King’s School Canterbury and King’s College Cambridge; he specialises in oratorio and recital-work, though operatic engagements have included Death in Holst’s Savitri, Salieri in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Mozart and Salieri, and Debussy’s La chute de la maison Usher.

Varcoe is a prolific recording artist and works regularly with Hyperion, with notable projects including appearances on Graham Johnson’s collections of the complete songs of Fauré and Schubert, Stanford songs with pianist Clifford Benson, and albums of Finzi, Parry and Armstrong Gibbs. Other discographical highlights Bach’s Mass in B minor, Handel’s Solomon, Jephtha and Alexander’s Feast (all under John Eliot Gardiner), and Fauré’s Requiem with John Rutter and The Cambridge Singers.

Later in life Varcoe completed at PhD in music at the University of York, and published a book Sing English Song: a practical approach to the language and the repertoire in 2000; following his PhD, he took up a faculty position at the Royal College of Music alongside his singing work.
