Janice Watson (Soprano)

Born: 8th April 1964

The British soprano Janice Watson began her musical career as a flautist before switching to singing after encouragement from the tenor Philip Langridge and studies with renowned sopranos Johanna Peters and Renata Scotto; early successes included the Kathleen Ferrier Memorial Award and the Royal Overseas League prize.

At the beginning of her career, Watson had considerable success in lighter lyric roles such as Mozart’s Pamina and Verdi’s Gilda, but really began to make an international impact when she transitioned into heavier Mozart roles such as Countess Almaviva and Vitellia and Britten: Ellen Orford in Peter Grimes became something of a signature-role for her (she recorded it for the late Richard Hickox, opposite her mentor Langridge in as Grimes, and also sang Mrs Coyle on his Gramophone Award-winning recording of Owen Wingrave.

Watson has appeared regularly on Chandos, both on their Opera In English series (Elisabetta in Don Carlos, and both Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte and the title-role in Jenůfa under Charles Mackerras) and in relatively neglected late nineteenth- and twentieth century British repertoire such as Sullivan’s Ivanhoe, Vaughan Williams’s The Poisoned Kiss, and Howells’s Missa Sabinensis and Stabat Mater.
