Ekaterina Semenchuk

Ekaterina Semenchuk (Mezzo-Soprano)

Born: 24th March 1976, Minsk, Belarus

Nationality: Belarussian

The Russian dramatic mezzo Ekaterina Semenchuk (born 1976) studied at the St Petersburg Academy and debuted at the Mariinsky Theatre whilst still a student; after spending her early career in relatively small roles in Russian repertoire such as Polina in Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades and Olga in his Eugene Onegin, she is now recognised as one of the world’s pre-eminent Verdi mezzos, with engagements including Lady Macbeth (opposite Plácido Domingo for Los Angeles Opera), Azucena in Il trovatore at the Salzburg Festival, Covent Garden, the Mariinsky and the Opéra National de Paris, and Amneris in Tokyo, Madrid, St Petersburg and Rome (her performance of the role on Antonio Pappano’s multi-award-winning recording of the opera in 2015 won praise from BBC Music Magazine for her ‘many subtle observations pertinent to the character's inner emotional world’). In 2005 Semenchuk sang Grechaninov at the marriage ceremony of HRH Prince of Wales and Camilla Parker-Bowles.
