Della Jones (Mezzo-Soprano)

Della Jones was born in South Wales in 1946 and studied at the Royal College of Music and in Switzerland, winning the Kathleen Ferrier Memorial Scholarship before making her professional debut in Geneva as Feodor in Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov. Particularly acclaimed in baroque and bel canto repertoire, her signature-roles include Adalgisa (Norma), the title-roles in Rossini’s La cenerentola and Handel’s Ariodante, and Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia; her wide discography includes numerous recordings for Opera Rara, including Donizetti rarities Ugo Conte di Parigi, Maria Padilla and L’assedio di Calais, Meyerbeer’s Dinorah and Il crociato in Egitto. More recently she has taken on more dramatic roles including Brangaene in Tristan und Isolde, Didon in Berlioz’s Les troyens, and Jocasta in Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex. In 1993 she was soloist at the Last Night of the Proms, performing ‘Rule, Britannia’ alongside Sir John Tomlinson, and also sang in the 1997 Hong Kong handover ceremony
