The Georgian-French pianist Khatia Buniatishvili was born in Batumi in 1987 and made her concerto debut aged just six; she trained at the Tbilisi State Conservatoire and Vienna’s University of Music and Performing Arts, with early successes including several prizes at the 12th Arthur Rubinstein Competition in 2008, a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award and a place of the BBC New Generation Artists scheme. In 2010 she signed an exclusive contract with Sony Classical; her first album on the label was an all-Liszt recital (released to mark the bicentenary of the composer’s birth) which prompted Classic FM to describe her as ‘a young artist with a huge temperament and technique that puts one in mind of the young Martha Argerich’ and BBC Music Magazine to praise her ‘focused intensity and sumptuous beauty of tone’.

Subsequent recordings have included Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with Paavo Järvi and the Orchestre de Paris, Motherland (with her pianist sister Gvantsa), Franck, Grieg and Dvořák violin sonatas with Renaud Capuçon on Erato, and Kaleidoscope (Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, Ravel’s La valse, and Stravinsky’s Three Movements from Petrushka).
