Born in Illinois in 1968, Matthew Polenzani studied at Eastern Illinois University and the Yale School of Music, making his Metropolitan Opera debut in 1998 in a small role in Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov; since the early 2000s he has appeared there regularly in roles including David in Die Meistersinger, Nadir in the house’s first production of Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers in over a century, the Italian Singer in Renée Fleming’s final performances of Der Rosenkavalier, and Leicester in Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda opposite Joyce DiDonato in the title-role (all of these productions are available on DVD). Elsewhere, key roles include Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore), Des Grieux (Massenet’s Manon), Gerald (Lakmé), Ernesto (Don Pasquale), and the Duke in Rigoletto.

Polenzani’s discography includes a recital of Schubert, Beethoven, Hahn and Britten on Wigmore Hall Live (‘a sensitive, outstanding performance’ – BBC Music Magazine) and Volume 1 of Hyperion’s Complete Liszt Songs project (both with the pianist Julius Drake). Honours and prizes include the 2004 Richard Tucker Award and the 2008 Beverly Sills Artist Award.
