Polish baritone Mariusz Kwiecień was born in Kraków in 1972 and trained at the Warsaw Academy of Music and later on the Metropolitan Opera's Lindemann Young Artist Development Program; he made his professional debut as Purcell’s Aeneas in Kraków in 1993, and represented his country at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition in 1999. He is particular associated with the title-roles of Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin and Szymanowski’s Król Roger, all of which are available on DVD.

Kwiecień’s debut solo album, Slavic Heroes (including operatic arias by Tchaikovsky, Smetana, Moniuszko, Szymanowski and Rachmaninov) was released on Harmonia Mundi in 2012 (‘Kwiecieñ fields wide variety of dynamic and tone-colour to convey dramatic mood’ – Opera Magazine); his discography also includes Marcello (opposite Rolando Villazón’s Rodoflo and Anna Netrebko’s Mimì) on Bertrand de Billy’s 2007 recording of La bohème, Brahms’s German Requiem with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and Chopin songs with Aleksandra Kurzak and Nelson Goerne.
