Nationality: Danish

The Danish bass Stephen Milling was born in 1965 in Copenhagen, and trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Music before becoming a member of the Royal Danish Opera, making his major international debut as Rocco in Fidelio at La Scala (under Riccardo Muti) in 1999. Particularly in demand as Wagner’s King Marke, Gurnemanz, Pogner, Daland, Hunding, Fasolt, Fafner and Hagen, his repertoire also includes Verdi’s Filippo (Don Carlo), Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Sarastro and the Marchese di Calatrava (La forza del destino).

Milling’s discography includes Narbal on Sir Colin Davis’s landmark 2000 recording of Berlioz’s Les Troyens, ‘a suitably towering comic monster performance’ (Gramophone) as Jeronimus in Nielsen’s Maskarade on Dacapo, Fafner in Das Rheingold on Jaap van Zweden’s Ring Cycle with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, and Fasolt in Kasper Holten’s Copenhagen production of The Ring Cycle on DVD.
