Nationality: Italian

The Italian soprano Barbara Frittoli was born in 1967 in Milan, where she studied at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory, and made her La Scala debut in 1992 in Bellini’s Beatrice di Tenda. Six years later she sang the role of Liù in Turandot at the Forbidden City under Zubin Mehta; the performance was filmed and released on DVD by RCA.

Frittoli is particularly in demand for Mozart and Verdi: key roles include Alice Ford in Falstaff (which she sings opposite Bryn Terfel’s ‘fat knight’ in Graham Vick’s acclaimed Covent Garden production, available on DVD from Opus Arte, and opposite Ambrogio Maestri in a production from Zurich in the C Major label), Desdemona in Otello, Amelia in Simon Boccanegra and Donna Elvira Don Giovanni, Fiordiligi [Così fan tutte and the Countess in Le nozze di Figaro. Her discography also includes Leonora in in Riccardo Muti’s 2000 recording of Il trovatore, Mimì on Zubin Mehta’s La bohème, and a collection of Mozart arias with Sir Charles Mackerras and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra on Erato.
