Julia Hamari (Mezzo-Soprano)

Born: 21st November 1942, Budapest

Julia Hamari was born in Budapest in 1942, studying at the city’s Franz Liszt Academy and later in Stuttgart, where she would go on to sing the title-role in Carmen under Karajan. Her solo debut took place in Vienna in the St Matthew Passion (under Karl Richter) in 1966, and she sang her first professional operatic role (Mercédès in Carmen, at the Salzburg Festival) the following year.

Hamari is particularly associated with Bach: she appears on many of Helmuth Rilling’s cantata recordings on Hanssler, and also recorded with Karl Richter and her compatriots Frigyes Sandor and György Lehel. Her discography also includes a recital of Gluck, Mozart, Rossini, Liszt and Donizetti for Hungaroton’s Great Hungarian Voices series, Olga on Sir Georg Solti’s recording of Eugene Onegin and Magdalene on his 1976 Meistersinger, Pergolesi’s Stabat mater under Lamberto Gardelli, and Malcolm (opposite Montserrat Caballé’s Elena) on Piero Bellugi’s recording of Rossini’s La donna del lago.
