Helmut Deutsch

Helmut Deutsch (Piano)

Born: 24th December 1945, Vienna

Nationality: Austrian

Born in Vienna in 1945, Helmut Deutsch is widely recognised as one of the finest lieder pianist working today. He studied and later taught piano, composition and musicology in his native city, winning the Vienna Composition Prize; his first long-term lieder relationship was with the soprano Irmgard Seefried, since which he has worked with many of the world’s finest singers including Matthias Goerne, Jonas Kaufmann, Diana Damrau, Hermann Prey, Mauro Peter, Dietrich Henschel, Angelika Kirchschlager and Hans Hotter.

His discography includes Winterreise, Die schìöne Müllerin and a Gramophone Award-winning album of Strauss Lieder with his former student Kaufmann on Harmonia Mundi (‘Deutsch elicits wonderfully rich sonorities in the accompaniment of these settings – Opera Today), Liszt songs with Damrau on Erato (‘his insights into the atmosphere and psychology of these works are as compelling as Damrau's’ – Classic FM), and Brahms’s Liebeslieder-Waltzer) with Barbara Bonney, Anne Sofie von Otter, Kurt Streit, Olaf Bär and Bengt Forsberg.
