Alisa Weilerstein (Cello)

Born: 14th April 1982, Rochester, New York, USA

Nationality: American

Artist's website: https://alisaweilerstein.com/

Alisa Weilerstein was born into a musical family in New York in 1982, and began learning the cello at four; her violinist father Donald founded the Cleveland Quartet, and her mother Vivian Jornik Weilerstein is also a professional concert-pianist and chamber-musician. Weilerstein made her concerto debut at 13, performing Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations with the Cleveland Orchestra, and went on to study at the Cleveland Institute of Music and (as an historian) Columbia University.

• Weilerstein is particularly interested in contemporary music, and has premiered works including Matthias Pintscher’s Un despertar, Pascal Dusapin’s Outscape, and Lera Auerbach’s 24 Preludes for Violoncello and Piano; her recording of Elliott Carter’s Cello Concerto (on which she worked closely with the composer) was Recording of the Year at the 2014 BBC Music Magazine Awards (‘Weilerstein [gives] her heart and soul to Carter’s constantly evolving filigree line we’re always aware of the concerto’s singing voice’ – The Times). Her discography also includes Chopin and Rachmaninov Cello Sonatas with pianist Inon Barnatan (‘rhapsodic and stylish accounts’ – San Francisco Chronicle), Dvorak’s Cello Concerto and Silent Woods with the Czech Philharmonic and Jiří Bělohlávek (a finalist at the 2015 Gramophone Awards), and Haydn Cello Concertos and Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht on Pentatone with the Trondheim Soloists.
