Anna Stéphany

Anna Stéphany (Mezzo-Soprano)

Born: 1977, England

Nationality: English

The Anglo-French mezzo Anna Stéphany was born in the North East of England in 1978 and studied at King’s College London, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and the National Opera Studio; early successes included the Guildhall Gold Medal and first prize in the Kathleen Ferrier Competition in 2005, and in 2009 she represented England in the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. She spent much of her early career as an ensemble-member at Zurich Opera House, where roles included Siebel in Gounod’s Faust, Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro, Romeo in I Capuleti and Dorabella in Così fan tutte.

In 2017 she debuted at both Covent Garden (as Octavian in [Der Rosenkavalier) and Glyndebourne, where she was originally scheduled to sing Annio in La clemenza di Tito but replaced a pregnant Kate Lindsay as Sesto to glowing reviews (‘the evening’s undoubted star was Anna Stéphany…dispatching both his-her big arias with terrific élan and immaculate technical control.’ – The Telegraph); she returned the following year as the ‘other’ Sesto in a revival of David McVicar’s landmark production of Handel’s Giulio Cesare.

Stéphany’s debut solo album, Black is the Colour, was released on Alpha in 2018; her discography also includes the title-role in Handel’s Serse (replacing an ailing Sarah Connolly at short notice) on Chandos with the Early Opera Company, Charlotte in Massenet’s Werther opposite Juan Diego Flórez (available on DVD and Blu-ray from Zurich Opera), and Mozart’s Requiem with the London Symphony Orchestra and Sir Colin Davis.
