Kristine Opolais was born in Rēzekne in 1979 and trained at the Latvian Academy of Music, beginning her career at Latvian National Opera; she made her Covent Garden debut in 2011 as Madama Butterfly and Metropolitan Opera debut two years later as Magda in La Rondine (subsequent roles at The Met have included Rusalka, Manon Lescaut and Mimì in La bohème, which she first sang on just a few hours’ notice the afternoon after singing Madama Butterfly at the same house).

Opolais’s discography includes Polina in Prokofiev’s The Gambler (conducted by Daniel Barenboim and directed by Dmitri Tcherniakov) on C Major, and the title-roles in Tosca, Rusalka and Manon Lescaut (all on DVD/Bluray).

From 2011 until 2018 Opolais was married to the conductor Andris Nelsons, whom she met early in her career whilst a member of Latvian National Opera. The two worked together on a regular basis in the opera house, the studio and the concert-hall – their recording of Puccini’s Suor Angelica was a finalist at the 2013 BBC Music Magazine Awards.
