Of Mexican heritage, the American soprano Ailyn Pérez was born in Chicago in 1979 and trained at Indiana University and Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia; early successes included second prizes at Operalia and the George London Award, and the Richard Tucker Award in 2012. She is particularly acclaimed in the title-role of La Traviata, and as Massenet’s Manon, Gounod’s Juliette, both Musetta and Mimì in La bohème, and Adina in L’elisir d’amore.

Pérez’s discography includes Poème d’un jour (a recital of Hahn, Obradors, Fall and Fauré with pianist Iain Burnside, which prompted both International Record Review and the Sunday Times to compare her with Victoria de los Angeles), Love Duets with her then-husband Stephen Costello, and the comic role of Tatyana Bakst on the world premiere recording of Jake Heggie’s Great Scott.
