The American dramatic soprano Heidi Melton was born in Spokane in 1982 and studied at the Eastman School of Music and the Curtis Institute of Music; early successes included a George London Foundation award and an Adler Fellowship at San Francisco Opera. She is particularly associated with Wagner (La presse described her as ‘the Wagnerian voice we have been waiting for since Flagstad and Nilsson’), with notable engagements including Isolde at English National Opera and Karlsruhe, Elisabeth in Tannhäuser and Elsa in Lohengrinat the Deutsche Oper Berlin, and Sieglinde at Bayreuth and on Jaap van Zweden’s ‘Hong Kong Ring Cycle’ on Naxos (she also sings Brünnhilde in Siegfried on the same cycle). Her discgraophy also includes an all_Wagner recital with Paul Daniel and the Orchestre National de Bordeaux Aquitaine on the Actes Sud label (‘[Melton] displays great assurance and considerable accomplishment in this trio of vocal items. Placed well forward of the orchestra, she has no obvious technical weaknesses.’ – Gramophone).
