Francis Poulenc

Francis Poulenc (1899-1963)

French composer who was a member of the group knwn as Les Six. He had little formal musical education and although generally described as being neo-classical, he delighted in being his own man. His music is both light-hearted yet profound. His Three Mouvements Perpetuel were written while he was at the Front in the First World War. His Organ Concerto is well known. He also wrote an opera, Les Carmelites, and some church choral music.
