Giacomo Antonio Domenico Michele Secondo Maria Puccini

Giacomo Antonio Domenico Michele Secondo Maria Puccini (1858-1924)

Composer

Giacomo Puccini has been described as "the greatest composer of Italian opera after Verdi", and his operas are some of the most popular and frequently-performed of all time, including Tosca, La bohème, Madama Butterfly and Turandot. He is known for his astonishing gift for melody, matched by a strong theatrical sense and rich harmonisation and orchestration. Puccini contracted throat cancer towards the end of 1923, and died the following year from complications after an experimental radiation therapy treatment. His final opera, Turandot, was left unfinished, and was subsequently completed by his contemporary, Franco Alfano, as well as more recently in an alternative version by Luciano Berio.
